Does your past ever haunt you?

I suppose I dwell on things—perhaps far too frequently. Besides, I’ve always been one of those overly emotional types who tends to overanalyze and fret incessantly about every little detail, so there you have it; it isn’t that I am incapable of moving forward, heaven knows I am taking steps, but that past... it just seems to linger perpetually in my periphery.
Last night, I found myself caught in yet another series of dreams, and I honestly felt like I was just slamming my head against a wall—thinking, "for how much longer?!" and such.
I certainly wasn't always the picture of innocence, though, on the other hand, quite a few people have gone out of their way to hurt and mess with me quite deeply. So, I suppose I’ve reached some sort of equilibrium, but it certainly makes things more difficult.
How am I coping?
Some days are easier, and some are significantly harder.
Over the last six months, I have essentially turned my entire life around by 180 degrees. It is almost unrecognizable now. I did everything within my power. Honestly, I feel I have accomplished more in this short window than I did in the previous 24 years. 🤔
And I am constantly striving to work on myself and the specific areas that interest me. I am becoming more self-aware. I am trying to forgive my own mistakes. And to forgive others, too.
I wouldn't call myself a pessimist, but if I am being perfectly honest with you 😛, there are moments—especially after nights like last night, when those dreams return—where I get this nagging sensation that it might never actually leave me. 🎉
And then, lo and behold, I stumble right upon your topic!
But I suppose there remains the hope that time eventually does its work. So, hopefully, things will get easier.
We are all individuals, after all. Don't give up 🙂
When things feel at their absolute worst, that is precisely when you must push through. Even when it feels utterly impossible, I can see from my own experience that some kind of progress is being made.
The fact that you are aware of your mistakes is wonderful; truly. And it isn't something everyone possesses. What happened, happened. Now, just move your ass however you can. You aren't going to be crying about it for years, surely; you are far beyond that stage.
And then there is that old cliché—that things had to happen this way, for some reason or another 😛
