Exactly. That’s part of the equation. We all finish a workday completely drained, so you don't just walk through the door and relax. You have to get the kids outside, run errands, handle the grocery shopping—it never ends. Even helping with homework requires active parenting. At least for first graders, until they actually develop a sense of discipline. Honestly, I find it presumptuous to expect a teacher to wrap everything up by noon and then act like parents should have zero clue what their child is actually studying or doing in class. And sure, you have to let them learn to manage their own responsibilities, but you also have to guide them toward that independence. By fifth grade, if someone is still asking you if your kid finished their homework, it’s already too late for those kinds of questions.

I genuinely can't wrap my head around the idea that people use after-school programs just to get the homework out of the way. If it were up to me, I’d be thrilled to pick my kid up right when school lets out, bring them home for lunch, and then sit down to help them with their work afterward. That’s what being a parent is about. It isn't about outsourcing your responsibilities so you don't have to deal with schoolwork or your child later in the day just because "it's already done" at school.☕
