Living with Melancholy in Psychology & Therapy ·
Look,

I never said a nice little stroll was going to magically cure me—I’m just saying what actually helped me feel even a tiny bit better in my specific situation. I don't see why anyone thinks there's anything unserious about that.
Seeing a therapist? Absolutely! Living a healthy, organized life? Heck yeah! You have to put in some actual effort; you can't just sit around getting high and expect things to fix themselves—that's just my take. I'm talking about the milder to moderate versions of this stuff. From everything I've seen, I just don't have any faith in antidepressants... it's just... I mean, where's the proof they actually work? But then again, if I actually, truly believed they worked, maybe I *would* feel better. But that's just the whole power of autosuggestion at work, I guess. 😉

Also, Melancholy IS depression, just a lighter version. That doesn't mean living with it is easy, because it isn't. It just means you're "getting by," as someone else here put it... basically, I manage to handle the bare essentials... hygiene, showing up to my job, keeping up some sort of facade of being a normal person... The painful part is that you're mostly just living day to day. You don't find joy in anything; you're just enduring, just surviving... And I've been doing this since early puberty! Honestly, it's brutal, it's awful. I didn't sleep a wink last night so I don't have the energy to get all descriptive, but those who are in it know...

It feels like a constant state of Melancholy, which kind of describes it, but even that isn't quite right. All the symptoms of depression are there, except that you're somewhat functional on the outside (though obviously, there are those bad phases where even that fails). That's pretty much how it is for me...

The actual clinical term for this is Melancholy. Honestly, I’ve been fighting it my whole life. If I had to put a label on it, I’d say it’s like a low-grade, constant depression... you know? It comes in waves, though—some days are better, some are absolute trash. Right now, I’m hitting a really rough patch.... I’ve basically been a zombie for the last three days... just pure misery, total gloom, the whole nine yards. I’m finally starting to feel a tiny bit more human today.

For me, getting active was the biggest game changer! But man, alcohol is a hard "no"—it just drags all those suppressed emotions straight to the surface, and then I spend the next forty-eight hours in literal hell. Living healthy and trying to stay positive helps sometimes, but let’s be real... not always.

I find it wild how much faith people on this forum have in antidepressants! Like, just pop a pill and boom—problem solved. Look, don't come for me, but it feels incredibly naive to me. In my book, meds are strictly for the extreme cases. If there's any other way to handle it, go that route instead. Seriously, when I read about people popping these things like they're Tic Tacs...🤦 ... psychotherapy and doing the actual work on yourself is the way to go. A ton of work, and even more talking it out with a pro. Again, please don't dogpile me if you're pro-pill, it's just my take... but I've researched this topic extensively—watched every video and read everything I could get my hands on. And honestly? I don't see people actually getting better because of them. Plus, I'm not buying that whole "serotonin deficiency" theory. It's way more complicated than that. The human psyche is a massive mystery... at the end of the day, love, support, and actually being understood help the most...

Has anyone here actually dealt with depression, tried antidepressants, and felt better? Please, let me know... I would be so incredibly grateful to hear from someone who has!!
