Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·

Oh, absolutely. My kids were waiting on those religious education textbooks even though I made it crystal clear—twice, mind you—in writing that they wouldn't be attending those classes. When it came time to hand out the materials, the teacher just casually mentioned that anyone not participating could just hand the books back. So, I stood up, handed them over—literally the only person to do it 🤣—and honestly? Nothing. No big deal, everyone acted like it was totally fine. But then, come second grade, they didn't even get them. ☕

My son is actually the only kid in his second-grade class who doesn't take religion class—it’s just how the schedule is set up, where they have a block period for it at the end of the day, so he basically gets out early. We haven't run into any issues so far, honestly. He’s been there for the school celebrations like Bread Day, and when they lit candles at the memorial service for the fall of Memphis, he was right there praying along with everyone else. It’s not like he didn't understand what was happening or anything—he was present, even if he wasn't being super vocal about it. My daughter starts school this fall, and she’ll likely be the only one in her grade skipping religion class too. She’s a bit more sensitive than her brother, so we'll see how she handles being the odd one out, but I have zero intention of enrolling her just for the sake of following the crowd. This is a pretty large school, with at least four different classes per grade level. From what I gather, there are a few others in the second grade who opt out, but in his specific group, he’s totally alone. We wouldn't call ourselves strictly religious people, but we definitely observe the holidays—especially Christmas, mostly because we see it as a chance to just get everyone together and spend quality time with friends and family.

Lawrence Torres56 said:If that computer science class is happening on a Saturday when school isn't even in session, then you better believe they’re gonna charge extra for it. I mean, seriously, if they're making us show up on a weekend, why wouldn't they try to squeeze some more cash out of us?
So, just to clear things up for anyone wondering—computer science as an elective isn't even on the table until fifth grade. I mean, come on, you can't exactly start teaching advanced tech electives when the kids are still in first grade, right? It just doesn't make sense to jump into that kind of curriculum that early.

Let’s be real—people still act like abortion is this massive, disgusting taboo, even though we're living in a world where kids are basically hitting milestones involving intimacy by the time they're in fourth or fifth grade. It’s wild, right? Yet for most parents out there, it remains this huge, heavy subject that everyone just avoids at all costs. I mean, let’s face it, nobody in their right mind is going to try to sugarcoat it or make it sound pretty when the reality is what it is.
Honestly, wouldn't it be pretty useful to actually dig into what sparked this whole thing in the first place when we're talking about abortion?😉

They were discussing the Ten Commandments—specifically "Thou shalt not kill"—so she brought up abortion as a form of murder.
Now, let’s get one thing straight: no rational adult is going to try to make abortion sound pleasant. There is absolutely nothing about it that is "nice" or "beautiful." But telling a group of 9 or 10-year-olds the graphic details—describing how a baby is scooped out with a spoon or having its bones broken—is just wrong. We can all agree that's a completely unacceptable way to handle this.

I completely missed the mark regarding how those elective courses work—I honestly thought you were required to pick at least one, so I probably just mixed everything up in my head while signing up.

On another note, my niece came home two days ago absolutely shell-shocked after her religion class. She’s only in 4th grade, and I am telling you, the teacher explained abortion to them in the most revoltingly graphic way imaginable. Every single kid in that class went home and told their parents the exact same story, which led to a bunch of parents contacting the school to demand to know what they’re going to do about it. Honestly, I have no clue what the administration can even do at this point. This teacher has had her fair share of outbursts before, but this? This was a whole new level of inappropriate...

I don’t even have a kid in school yet, but I was eavesdropping on some moms the other day and my jaw hit the floor. One of them was claiming that the school district moved Computer Science to a Saturday elective—which, let's be real, nobody is showing up for—but they kept Religious Studies right in the middle of the regular weekday schedule. And get this: apparently, kids are signing up for Religious Studies in droves just because it doesn't require trekking into school on a Saturday. Tell me I’m hallucinating. Tell me I didn't just hear that correctly. There is absolutely no way an actual American school system would operate with that kind of blatant, ridiculous logic—it's just absurd. 🕺

Edit: Honestly, this might actually belong in the thread about religious education—if it does, please move it over.

My brother works over at Lockheed Martin. I can definitely check with him if you let me know which department that technician of yours is in—there's a chance they might already know each other. Then again, there are a ton of technicians working there, so I'm not making any promises.
