Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·

My kid is already set on one anyway, though it’s a language that probably isn't even offered at any local academy, so this elective is really just a nice little bonus.

Exactly. You have a shot at learning an extra language for free, and it would be a waste not to take it. We live in San Francisco—a massive tourist hub where being multilingual is everything—so we decided to jump on the French classes.

In my first grader's class, over half aren't enrolled—and honestly, most who did sign up just did it so their kid wouldn't feel left out... they'll probably pull them out next year anyway. I love Cleveland 😍

We signed her up just to see if she'd actually be interested, since we aren't particularly religious ourselves. Plus, we didn't want her feeling isolated, especially since they're too young to wander the halls alone during that period until fourth grade. But now that she's in fifth, she doesn't have to go. Honestly, with all the core subjects they have now, the workload is getting heavy. We don't want any non-essential fluff distracting her from her main studies.

That sounds like an absolute dream 🙏

It works out great for anyone skipping religion or choosing a different elective, since English is the only mandatory one... Religion is an elective too. My daughter took it for her first four years, but we pulled her out once she hit fifth grade because the workload is getting heavy. They get history, geography, and tech, then in seventh grade it’s biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science becomes mandatory next year.

We actually pulled ours out because the fifth-grade schedule is just too packed. We're worried about the burnout. We didn't mention anything about atheism... religion isn't a required subject.
