I was watching some highlights from the recent major meets last night, and it got me thinking about how brutal elite sports really are. We always talk about the winners and the podium finishers, but there's a massive, silent group of athletes who are arguably just as talented but end up finishing just outside the medals.

It’s a tough pill to swallow. I remember being in high school track and missing a qualifying time by literally a fraction of a second. That split second felt like an eternity. You spend years training, sacrificing everything, and then it all boils down to a moment so brief you can barely blink. To be that close—to be in the top five in the world or a certain region—and yet walk away with nothing to show for it in the trophy cabinet... it's heavy.

Do you think the "almost" athletes find it harder to move on than the ones who fail completely, or is it easier because you know you actually belong at that level?
