Feeling nostalgic? in Psychology & Therapy ·
Paul Bennett3 said:Your story hits close to home. It reminds me of my childhood summers spent at my grandma’s farm out in rural Iowa. Now, whenever I head back up there and see those empty houses, it’s a gut punch. So many people I grew up with have been gone for years. That’s just how it goes. Cherish these moments while your family is still all together. It’s part of life. I know it feels heavy now, but you’ll learn to carry it...
There's no other way to look at it. Don't dwell on the loss too much. When you do find yourself spiraling, try to focus on the good stuff—the beautiful memories from that place, the people who shaped you, and the peace you found there compared to the chaos ahead. Look toward the future instead. Life keeps moving...

Thanks so much, 👍. I already feel a bit better. It's hard enough trying to navigate your own path, let alone anyone else's.

Hi everyone.

I grew up in a small town, and I’m hit by this overwhelming sense of nostalgia—or whatever you want to call it. Almost every evening, I walk up to a local hilltop where I can sit alone and look out over the entire community.

It’s hard to put into words—there's this tightness in my chest when I look at the houses and streets where there used to be so much laughter, so much life, so many kids...

A lot of people have passed away, but most just moved abroad. I find myself thinking about old friends who aren't here anymore—the backyard BBQs, playing soccer... I'm young, a college student; maybe I shouldn't be feeling this much sadness, but I can't help it. I'm still here with my family, though I'll be graduating soon—and I'll probably have to move away too.
How do you deal with this much nostalgia—or whatever this feeling actually is?
