One of the most enduringly inspirational pieces ever penned was composed by the American attorney and poet Max Ehrmann (1872–1945). He spontaneously drafted his poem Desiderata—a meditation on life's aspirations—back in 1927, though the work, much like the man himself, did not achieve widespread recognition until decades after his passing.

In 1933, Ehrmann shared it with his circle as a Christmas card. With his blessing, the American psychiatrist Merrill Moore later utilized the poem as a tool for psychological support and treatment for soldiers during World War II, eventually continuing to share it with clients in his private practice in Boston.

Nowadays, Desiderata circulates the internet under the misconception that it is an Irish blessing discovered in 1642 at Saint Paul's Church in Baltimore. In reality, the Reverend Frederick Kates, the rector of that church, included it in a compilation of sermons for his congregation without attributing it to an author. Because that collection noted the founding date of the institution as "Old Saint Paul’s Church, Baltimore A. D. 1692," the myth emerged that the text was an ancient discovery found within the church walls.

And this is how they’re being raised now:

True, but on a global scale, even God can no longer goad the misguided nations of the Middle East into fresh conflicts.

Did we simply realize it was a utopia? Or have we undergone a sort of social devolution? I am curious to know what others think.

Precisely. If you observe small children playing, the dynamic becomes quite clear: one child possesses a mountain of toys while another has just one single item, yet the first will attempt to snatch that solitary toy away without offering even a fraction of their own collection in exchange.

Eventually, once they break their toys and find their own corners of the world insufficient, they will inevitably decide they require the entire planet.
