What should I get for a godparent gift at a Baptism? in Students & Teens ·
What? I'm the problem? Look, I agreed to be the godfather—I laid out exactly how I view the whole role. It’s not just about showing up, buying some overpriced gift, and calling it a day. To me, being a godfather means being that reliable safety net for the kid—someone they can turn to when things get messy or if they need to talk about something they aren't ready to bring to their parents. Basically, I'm an extra set of hands for the parents while the kid is little, and hopefully, a lifelong friend as they grow up. But instead, it went the complete opposite way. I gave the kid a gift, and almost immediately after the ceremony, everything just evaporated. No more good vibes, no more talking—nothing. Not from the kid, and not from his parents either. So what am I supposed to do? Beg them for a conversation to explain why this behavior is trash? Yeah, right... As if. To top it all off, his parents actually admitted they wanted someone else entirely, but since the boy insisted on me, they just rolled with it. Maybe I *am* the problem, but I'm certainly not wasting my breath trying to convince people they're wrong—especially them. That's just a losing battle.

He’s still just a kid being raised by pretty clueless parents. What’s your excuse?

Look, my excuse is simple: I’m not about to waste my breath trying to explain life to some 14-year-old kid who hasn't even hit puberty yet—he probably wouldn't get half of it anyway. Besides, it's not my business to step in and play parent to someone else's kid, no matter how much of a disaster he might be. And let's get one thing straight—I didn't blow my life because of a little extra cash. I knew exactly how this whole mess was going to end from the very beginning.

EDIT: My kid is graduating high school this year. I organized a late-night hike to a local shrine with the priest, bringing guitars, music, and prayer. The kids are actually pretty hyped for it. 😉

I’m genuinely trying to figure it out here—where exactly did I go wrong?

Look, I’ve been around the block enough to know what being a godfather actually means. A few years back, this little kid—smart kid, really—asked me to be his godfather. We were tight back then; he was bright, I got along great with his parents, so I figured, why not? No big deal. Then came the question about the gift. He asks for a laptop. I thought, okay, sure—even though it’s a massive ask and definitely not "budget-friendly," but hey, I asked the question, so whatever. Anyway, the kid starts listing off specific specs like he’s some tech reviewer—this model, that processor, all that jazz. I told him, "Kiddo, that’s a bit out of my league." So, his parents chime in, saying if it’s too much for me, they’ll chip in the difference. Honestly? I should have told them where to shove it, but I didn't. I bought the exact machine he wanted, handled everything, and you know what? Now we aren't even close. The kid doesn't reach out, I send him a text for his birthday, New Year's, Christmas, Easter—that's it. It's wild how many kids are just like that nowadays. And get this: the laptop cost me roughly $1.75, and he managed to break it in less than six months.

I’m thinking about picking up a mini laptop so I can stay mobile when I need to head out, but the IRS has posted these requirements:
The minimum recommended configuration for a desktop or laptop to use the IRS application is:

• CPU Intel Pentium IV 2 GHz or a processor with similar characteristics

• 1024 MB of RAM

• Graphics resolution of 1024x768 (in color)

• Operating system Microsoft Windows XP sp3 (x86) or newer

And what I’ve actually found online is:
- 1.8 GHz dual core processor
- 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD
- 10.1" monitor, which means a 1024x600 resolution
- Windows 7

I suppose you could say I'm wondering if everything would actually work on this machine??

Thanks

That "minimum configuration" stuff was from back when the app was actually an application—nowadays it's just a web app, so the raw power of your computer doesn't even matter for whether it works or not. As long as you have Java running, that's basically it. With this setup:

- 1.8 GHz dual core processor
- 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD
- 10.1" monitor, specifically a 1024x600 resolution
- Windows 7

It'll run just fine.

Those "minimum specs" were from back when the app was actually software—now it’s just a web app. Computer horsepower doesn't really matter anymore; it'll work or it won't. As long as you have Java running, that's basically it. With this:

Does the money just bounce back to them so he can try again with a different account? Honestly, this whole mess isn't even my problem—it's for a buddy of mine. He was working over in Italy and needs his paycheck. These idiots went and sent everything to the wrong account. It’s a protected account, sure, but they take a third right off the top. They were supposed to send $1000 to that one and the rest to an Austrian account... instead, those morons dumped everything into this single account. Naturally, he's looking at losing over $750 for absolutely no reason.

So he'd just throw away money he actually owes? Brilliant logic there...
