I was watching some old game tapes last night—nothing major, just some classic defensive masterclasses from a few years back—and it got me thinking about the weird way we consume professional sports today. It feels like we’ve drifted so far away from the actual mechanics of a winning team because our collective attention span is being hijacked by the "superstar" narrative.

Don't get me wrong, I love the flashy stuff. I love the 50-foot step-back threes, the gravity-defying dunks, and the players who look like they were designed in a video game to maximize highlight reels. That’s the stuff that sells jerseys and gets the views on social media. But lately, I feel like there's this massive disconnect between what actually makes a franchise successful and what the fans actually talk about during the post-game shows.

We have this obsession with "The Star." You know the drill: a team builds its entire identity around one or two massive personalities, and if those players aren't putting up 30 points a night, the fans start screaming for a trade. We treat roster construction like it's a collection of individual stats rather than a complex, interlocking puzzle. I see it all the time in discussions online—people looking at a roster and saying, "Where is our scoring? Why don't we have more firepower?" as if a game can be won simply by stacking more offensive weapons on the court.

But anyone who actually sits through a full forty-eight minutes of a gritty, defensive battle knows that the real magic happens in the stuff that doesn't show up in the box score. I’m talking about the guys who disrupt a rhythm, the ones who force a turnover just by being in the right place at the right time, or the players who make the "unseen" plays that keep an opponent from ever getting comfortable. These are the "glue guys." They aren't the ones getting the standing ovations, and they rarely get the MVP votes, but they are the literal foundation that allows the stars to shine.

I remember back in my college days, I played some intramural ball, and our team was absolutely lethal. We didn't have a guy who could drop thirty, but we had this one defender—a total pest—who would shadow the best player on the other team for the entire game. He wouldn't score a single point, but he’d finish the game with three steals and a dozen deflections. We won almost every game we played because he made the other team's life a living hell. We didn't need more shooters; we needed that disruption.

The problem is that it's much harder to market "disruption." It's much harder to build a brand around a player whose primary skill is making someone else look bad. It’s much more "exciting" to watch a guy score, even if his defensive lapses cost the team ten points at the other end. I worry that as sports media becomes more driven by short-form clips and social media engagement, we’re going to see a real shift in how teams are built and how fans judge success. If we keep prioritizing the "highlight" over the "grind," aren't we just watching a collection of individuals rather than a cohesive unit?

I've noticed that whenever a team makes a move for a specialist—someone brought in specifically to fix a structural weakness like perimeter defense or rebounding—the fan reaction is often lukewarm or even frustrated. "Why didn't we get a scorer instead?" is the common refrain. It’s like people forget that you can't build a house starting with the roof. You need the frame first.

Do you think the way we value players has become too skewed toward offensive stats? Are we losing the appreciation for the "dirty work" in favor of the highlight reel, and if so, is that actually hurting the quality of the game we watch?

I’ve got an invoice from a vendor in the USA that lists various goods.
At the bottom, where the final breakdown is, they added packaging and shipping fees... then you have the subtotal plus 0% sales tax, followed by the grand total.
Part of this goes toward fixed assets, and the rest counts as office supplies.

So... do I just report the acquisition of the goods, or should I include these services too, even though they aren't listed as separate line items?
Shipping is about $333, and packaging is $67.

Include everything in the asset acquisition, since it's all on the same invoice for the goods.

ruggedmaker2 said:Look, if you haven't filed your sales tax return for January yet, and that shipment actually landed in January, then just stick with the 01/31 date.
But, if you already hit "submit" on that January filing? Forget it. Just book it under 02/06 and roll it into your February taxes.

Thanks so much, 👍

ruggedmaker2, so I should record this in January for both the ledger and the sales tax, if I understood you correctly..?!?!

The goods were officially transferred on January 31st, we have the shipping documents in hand, but the invoice isn't dated until February 6th, 2015. Should I record this transaction in January using the exchange rate from the end of the month—meaning it hits the January VAT return—or wait until February 5th for the February filing?
Thanks so much!

ruggedmaker2, what happens if the delivery note is dated September 30th, but the invoice is dated October 1st?
The goods arrived on September 30th.

I could use some help here...
Regarding an asset acquisition: the delivery note is dated September 24, 2014, which is when the goods actually arrived in the US, but the invoice isn't dated until September 30, 2014.
The delivery note shows the quantity, but doesn't list a specific value.
For the sales tax filing, should I be using the exchange rate from September 24th or the one from the invoice date on September 30th?🙂
Thanks, everyone!

frozenangler12 said:As far as Medicare goes, I just handled the deregistration and nothing else... regarding HZZO, I honestly wouldn't know, since I don't actually use those services myself.

Don't you need an official termination notice on the Medicare portal?

Quick question regarding payroll... specifically terminations...
In the past, when we had an employee leave, we'd handle the paperwork through both NOAA and Medicare & Medicaid Services, including documentation for their dependents via Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Now that everything has transitioned to electronic filing with NOAA and Medicare & Medicaid Services this year, how does the termination process actually work?
What specific digital attachments are required for the electronic NOAA and Medicare & Medicaid Services filings?

Thanks so much for the help!!

Jeremy Anderson63 said:For Intrastat, it’s all about when the goods actually move in or out. But for tax liabilities? That kicks in the second the invoice is issued. So, based on that, you're looking at Intrastat in May, and the Sales Tax return in June.

Just so you know, the numbers on an Intrastat report don't necessarily have to match the Sales Tax filings perfectly.

Thanks, Jeremy Anderson63!!

I have one more question... I acquired some inventory in May, but it's defective and we're shipping it back to the US. We'll be receiving replacement stock in June. In this scenario, do I still need to include those returned items in my Intrastat reporting??
Thanks!

I have a quick question regarding some timing issues... 🤷 The goods arrived with a shipping manifest from the USA back on May 30th, but the invoice isn't dated until June 2nd—plus, I just received the hard copy in the mail. Should this be reported for Intrastat in May or June??
Thanks, everyone!

Brenda Chase3 said:You can actually attach pretty much anything as a PDF supplement. Any supporting documentation you would normally hand over physically can be uploaded. This includes letters, detailed explanations, or even a massive 100-page gross balance sheet if necessary—anything goes. 😉
The only thing is, could someone confirm how things work with KFC? I don't deal with profitable sole proprietorships, so I haven't had to file this way before.

- Does anyone know if Chamber of Commerce filings for profitable companies can also be done via PDF? Thanks!

Jack Carter88 said:That’s right, those attachments only pop up alongside the Sales Tax form.

Back when we were using the old software, you couldn't actually upload them—you were stuck just sending files to the Tourism Board and the IRS. But with this current system, everything is streamlined; you can submit whatever is required as long as it's in PDF format.

Hi everyone! Can I just upload everything as a single PDF along with my balance sheet and income statement? I'm looking to include the tax return attachments, the detailed ledger printouts from my accounting software, the VAT breakdown, and the local chamber of commerce fees (since I'm an LLC owner), or do I actually have to drop those off in person? 🙂
Thanks, everyone!

I could really use some guidance here...
I just received an invoice from a vendor in the European Union regarding shipping costs (moving items from production to the distribution company). Usually, they bundle these costs directly onto the product invoice, so I just include them in the landed cost of the goods. Should I be recording this in the import ledger as an acquisition of goods from the EU, or as a received service from the EU?
The actual goods were acquired back in November, but this specific invoice arrived in December.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I didn't get an email, so I gave them a call today instead. The representative walked me through the whole process—it was excellent! They are truly helpful and professional. 🙂

2. One program is strictly IE, whereas the IRS stuff should work on anything.
3. I actually ran into this once when my certificate expired. My certificate lapsed on the 28th, which was right when I needed to file my forms. Once I rushed over to the provider and renewed it, everything was back up and running within an hour.

silverbadger, my certificate expires on December 31st. What’s the protocol there—do I just head to the bank?
Thanks so much in advance!
