Sanctions on Russia in War in Ukraine ·
Gary Wilson said:It’ll effectively paralyze any transactions involving the Russian central bank on the global financial stage. We’re looking at a total shutdown of war financing through debt.

well, I guess that mostly comes down to China, damn...

Lol, nah—they basically just gave Estonia the green light to hand over their RPGs to Ukraine. I think Estonia bought them from Finland, who got them from Germany, and since Germany holds the veto power for stuff moving into war zones, they’re technically calling the shots.

Melissa Ward said:I wouldn't say that's quite true! Honestly, technology tends to take these massive leaps forward right during and immediately after a conflict. Look at World War II—it practically handed us nuclear energy, microwave tech, the entire semiconductor industry, jet engines, rockets, and so many other incredible breakthroughs!

Actually, most of that was basically already there before WWII—except maybe semiconductors, which came later. But, say, nylon came out of WWII (thanks to parachutes and socks being side products).
Radar (microwaves)—that’s what basically saved Britain in 1940. It existed, but without the war, it probably wouldn't have been ready for use back then. Early versions of jet engines and rockets (the Chinese were using rocket tech since gunpowder was invented, I guess) were also around before WWII. Even nuclear reactors existed before WWII—it was just the bomb itself that got built during the war.

So, it turns out none of that stuff actually "came from" WWII. 😬

Take the Sherman tank, for example. It helped the Americans win against Germany, and it was designed before the invasion of the USSR. But mass production didn't really kick in until late 1941. Funny enough, that's exactly when the tide turned on the Eastern Front. And yeah, the Sherman tank was an American design.

Maybe check history again—kings and emperors used to be right there in the thick of it. 😬

Honestly, I have no clue anymore—it was probably just the last paragraph of some article on the New York Post or something, but it got lost.

William Anderson5 said:I can't find the specific article, but I caught something on Bloomberg suggesting Chinese banks are tightening up on business financing in Russia just to make sure they don't accidentally get caught in the crosshairs of sanctions.

So they just switched everything over to yuan instead.

Nah, honestly, that DDoS attack they launched yesterday was basically it.

Richard Wilson4 said:The real question now is when that money actually hits the ground, what kind of gear it buys, and honestly, whether the Ukrainians even have the trained crews ready to handle it.

That last part... honestly, that feels like the biggest hurdle left. It could happen fast, too.

It’s starting to feel like the Russians are just going all-in with a brute force approach—from a military standpoint, anyway. I guess they just got lucky that the Ukrainians were pretty much caught off guard and disorganized during those first two days.

And honestly, why would they even care about sea routes when you can see the "bear" is trying to lock down every single embassy? Everyone else is just pulling out.
Even China is stepping in, saying oil and gas payments can only be made in yuan now.

So it turns out these "German" RPGs aren't actually German—they’re basically Estonian, which they bought from Finland, who got them from Germany, and apparently Germany still holds the veto power on selling stuff like that

velvetcanyon20 said:There’s a lot of strange, almost nonsensical logic behind this latest move from Russia.
In my view, Putin has essentially lost the war and left Russia permanently crippled. If anyone was still clinging to the fantasy that this would be some sort of bloodless, low-casualty version of Crimea 2.0...
well, I think those illusions have officially evaporated.

We’re looking at a much tougher, more uncertain year ahead, and let’s be honest—these sanctions are going to hit everyone's wallet.

As for that whole situation involving the Turks... they were already buying oil under the table from ISIS, so you can bet the trade and barter will continue. Grain will keep flowing out, dollars will keep flowing in... they’ll find a way to strike a deal behind closed doors...
The only real shift we might see is a change in how goods move. Prices could spike if everything has to go through "official" channels, because instead of direct deals with the Russians, everything will end up being routed through China.

Nah, won't happen. The paperwork will just get swapped mid-air with a commission, obviously.
