I have recently moved back in with my mother after being on my own for six years, and I must say, I am finding the transition incredibly difficult to manage. We are constantly at odds because she seems to take issue with everything; there is a continuous stream of criticism and nitpicking that makes the atmosphere increasingly tense—to the point where it feels almost unbearable. Since I am currently between jobs and she is retired, she spends nearly all her time at home without much of a social circle to speak of. This lack of engagement seems to fuel her frustration, and she even displays a certain level of jealousy toward me whenever I head out for a trip or an outing 🙄. I have suggested that perhaps joining a local community club or a senior center might help alleviate her boredom, but nothing seems to stick.
I suppose things will likely stabilize once I secure a new position, but I am left wondering how one is expected to endure this tension until 🤷
I know exactly what you're going through. I've dealt with that constant nagging my entire life, though my situation is twice as complicated since I live with both my mother and my grandmother. Every time my mom starts in on me, my grandma jumps right in to back her up. Trying to argue with them both is an exhausting daily battle. A few months ago, I finally hit my breaking point and decided to flip the script. I started giving them a taste of their own medicine, calling them out on the exact same things they do to me. Surprisingly, it actually worked... Mom's criticism has dropped significantly, and Grandma backed off as soon as she realized I wasn't taking it anymore. Things are much more manageable now, if nothing else...
Maybe that's your answer too. I know it's not the most graceful approach, but how else can you show them how much it's actually hurting you...😉
