I’m looking into overclocking my E4500 processor. Does anyone know what kind of clock speeds I can realistically hit before I'd need to start messing with the voltage?
If someone managed to hit a 24,000 in 3DMark, you have to assume they’re running liquid nitrogen or some crazy Crossfire setup, right? The whole thing is just absolutely insane. Don't go expecting to see those kinds of numbers using standard air cooling and mid-range components; it's just not going to happen.
If you're aiming to maintain a perfect 1:1 ratio between your FSB and your memory, I’d recommend setting it to 8x400. After all, not every processor can handle a 9x400 configuration without running into issues...
I’m not entirely sure; reaching 3GHz might be out of reach unless I bump up the voltage. Personally, I don't think it'll happen without a little extra juice, so I'll likely have to increase it.
It could potentially be due to using an older chipset like the 965, though I honestly have my doubts about that being the main bottleneck. I can tell you one thing for certain: hitting 2.8GHz is definitely doable without touching the voltage settings.
By the way, you really need to keep an eye on your memory frequency ratio. You can't just crank up the FSB and expect the RAM to follow suit every single time. If you leave everything at the default ratio, you won't be able to push your Windows performance any further because the memory speed will skyrocket past 1000MHz.
Your processor is almost identical to mine, a 9x200
In most cases, you’ll just need to head into your BIOS and check the CPU frequency; it will likely be sitting at 200 right now. You'll want to bump that up to 333, but please, do it incrementally. I'd suggest raising it by no more than 5 or 6 MHz at a time, then saving your settings and booting into Windows. If everything runs smoothly without any issues, then you can jump back into the BIOS to push it further.
While you're in there, you should also look for the PCI Express frequency and set that to 100.
If you notice your computer keeps restarting during the boot sequence, does that mean the CPU needs a bit more voltage? Exactly. Alternatively, if the system refuses to boot altogether, you might have set your memory latencies a little too low.
Oh man, if even the motherboard isn't holding up for you... But regarding that X7 Multi, I believe your board should be capable of handling a 400 FSB overclock, shouldn't it?
It’s honestly a bit depressing that we’ve reached a point where Crysis is basically the universal benchmark for whether a system is actually powerful or not...
So, how are you holding up with that 8800gts? Are you forced to run everything on medium settings just to keep it playable? I find myself playing on medium too, though if I remember correctly, the x1950 isn't even close to being as good as the gts-ice...
Edit: Okay, I can pull it off too, but my Pi score is sitting at a pretty mediocre 18-19.😁
But really, what’s actually going to cause a processor to fail prematurely? If you find things are getting a bit unstable, just bump up the voltage slightly when necessary—though I honestly suspect the stock settings will handle everything just fine. You might also consider adding some extra airflow to the case to keep things cool...
And look, we really can't say for sure until we see if those temperatures start creeping up toward the 80-90°C range, haha. If they do, then yeah, you’re definitely going to have to invest in a better cooler.😁
But honestly, even if you have to bump up the voltage just to hit that 3GHz mark, as long as your temps stay under control, there isn't any real need to swap out your current cooling setup...
I was actually wondering where that motherboard ended up I’m planning to pick them up soon, drop them right into the case, and then you'll be able to see the results for yourself I'll make sure everything is set up right up to the motherboard
So, that basically means you've hit the ceiling for this processor and there isn't any more headroom left to squeeze out performance. Have you tried bumping up the voltage?
