Communism was a failed project by its very nature, but the people share some of the blame for handing over the keys to the dictators and giving up on progressive ideas. Self-managed socialism managed to build something, but it was constantly undermined by the rigid ideology of communism. Unfortunately, that leadership was slightly better than the hardline communist regimes in Eastern Europe, but it lacked the freedom that would have truly advanced the country and its people. Of course, they isolated themselves in their thinking, much like you're doing right now.
If schools had taught constructive criticism instead of Marxism, things might actually look a lot better.
