So, let me introduce myself. Name's Borna, and I'm just a lite version of a misanthrope. I've got maybe four friends I actually hang out with. I hit the clubs once a month max; the rest of the time, I'm just chilling at home. Bottom line? Being a misanthrope isn't some sickness. It's a lifestyle. People just don't get it.😁

My childhood was exactly like that too. We're basically the same person. We can't stand each other. Haven't even spoken directly in a year—just checking in through other people to see if the other is still breathing.

Honestly, I’d love to just bundle my asexuality together with my upcoming descent into misanthropy🙂. Sex is constantly running through my head, so I actually find myself kind of envying asexual people. For what it's worth, I live with an asexual woman who, unlike me, loves people with the intensity of Mother Teresa. And now they say opposites don't attract.
This is easily my favorite time of year. Work has slowed down to a crawl, so I’m basically alone in my 400-square-foot office. New York City is a ghost town; you can walk down the street without bumping into a single soul. Even finding parking in those free zones is a breeze. It’s heaven.
Just as everyone else starts trickling back from their summer vacations, I’ll be heading off to my own little "island" for a month to play hermit. I'll be out there digging up tomatoes and potatoes, maybe catch some tuna, or just pull a few fish out of the water. I won't have to say "thank you" to Jesus to anyone. Pure bliss. Who says life can't be great?

BTW, I’m noticing we have quite a few kindred spirits here. If you didn't get on my nerves so quickly, it might actually be worth forming some kind of association—something like Universal Music Group (Humanity Foundation)

Two of them are a bit much, so I have to dole out my attention in tiny little drops just to survive! Unfortunately, because of my job, I’m forced to deal with a massive crowd of all sorts of random people every single day, and honestly, it drives me absolutely insane... it gets worse every damn day. I started feeling this way about four or five years ago, and now that I’m hitting 30, it's just hit a boiling point.
I genuinely love being home alone. I never get bored. That’s why I just don't get people who constantly need a crowd around them just to stave off boredom!

Now I’m sitting here wondering—am I just being selfish and self-centered? I feel like most of the stuff people talk about is just mindless, surface-level chatter. It makes me think, "Could we maybe discuss something actually intelligent?" Otherwise, I’d rather just sit there in silence.

And then there's the big question: how on earth am I going to adjust once I have a kid? It’s something I’m terrified of, but at the same time, I really want it to happen.
Any parents in the house?

I have one. And look, I love him more than life itself—truly. But he drives me absolutely insane sometimes. It's the truth.
I make a conscious effort to let most of his "nonsense" slide without a word. If I didn't, I’d probably lose my mind and go way too hard on him.

Bottom line: I adore him, but there are moments I can't stand him. (Keep in mind, he's an adult now, living pretty independently—basically the way I'd live if I were in his shoes.)

Fingers crossed. 👍

Bradley Palmer6 said:We are thinking exactly the same thing. Honestly, I’ve had it up to here with this whole crisis—the endless empty rhetoric, the sheer stupidity of people, the banks, big corporations, the media... just all of it. It’s exhausting. I constantly find myself daydreaming about just packing up and heading out to some remote island where there’s absolutely nothing and nobody. Just a tiny little house, a patch of decent soil for my garden, maybe some chickens, and nothing but pure peace and quiet. That's really all I need anymore. ☕

Unfortunately, fear and a sense of duty to my family are the only things stopping me from making this version of "paradise" a reality. At least in its basic form.

Jamie Davis9, I act the exact same way, letter for letter...
If I didn't have this constant urge to be close to women, a heated box under a bridge and one sandwich a day would probably be my version of paradise.

Aaron Howard27 said:How could I not? It’s just about staying upbeat—honestly, riding my bike has always been my go-to for a mood boost, especially with some good music playing in my ears. You’re a long way from being a total misanthrope like I am.
H-ha, you just have to put in the work and stay consistent. Just look at me!! 😁 😉

It's not like I'm actively chasing it. It would just be nice if people were actually interesting again, instead of what they are now...🙂

Aaron Howard27 said:You aren't a misanthrope—you've just fallen into a bit of a rut where everyone is getting under your skin. Just take a breather. You'll feel better soon enough.

So, Doc, am I gonna make it? 🙂

Aaron Howard27 said:For some people, it definitely leads toward isolation or becoming a bit of a hermit. For me, though—and this might sound a bit random—it actually pushed me toward cycling through the hills and valleys, finding new trails, and traveling more. Whether I'm heading out to the Pacific Northwest or just exploring a nearby national park, I can actually afford to do it now because I don't spend nearly as much money hitting up bars or going out every weekend. I even quit smoking! 😁
The only slightly awkward part is that initial feeling—that sense that your group of friends is looking at you a little weirdly because you're traveling solo—but hey, that passes pretty quickly. Just grab your sunglasses, pop some music in your earbuds, and just go.
I don't know about everyone else, but for me, it's been absolutely brilliant.
😍

That MP3 setup is pure gold.
Speaking from experience—having traveled quite a bit—people (and honestly, even most countries) aren't that different from back home, so even that isn't a perfect fix.
Every so often, I get the urge to head out on a multi-day motorcycle trip alone. The issue is my family hates me traveling solo, so they almost always find some other biker to tag along just so I'm not by myself. But the whole man-and-machine symbiosis—like man and horse used to be—is really about exploring the unknown on your own terms. It's classic... like a cowboy in a Western. 😁

feralorca82 said:Not necessarily. I think you've just realized that most people constantly drain you with their drama, and you want an escape.
It's true, some people just love dumping their baggage on everyone else. Maybe they actually want someone else to fix their mess for them. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to tune that out.
Just because you prefer keeping your own stuff to yourself to avoid being a burden doesn't mean everyone else gets a free pass to suffocate you with their problems, right?

I think that’s exactly why you're looking for an outlet in the "digital world." At least there, you can find some peace. If you don't feel like listening to something (quote), you just don't. You can always just turn your back on whatever is annoying you.
In the real world, it's never that easy. You're always trying to figure out how to shut someone down without being a jerk about it.

But hey, that's just my two cents.

This pretty much sums it up. Lately, I’ve been trying to find some peace—if I can't make peace with the people around me, at least I try to be at peace with myself after telling them where to shove it. And then I feel bad. Honestly? The payoff is usually pathetic. It’s like most people have zero self-respect. After I get blunt with them, they end up apologizing for things they didn't even do, and listening to those apologies just makes me feel even worse.

I know I’ll sound completely delusional, but out on my remote island, there isn't a soul around—no people, no computers, nothing. My mind keeps drifting to this one idea: just digging into the dirt and starting a vegetable garden. The catch? I have zero clue what I'm doing and I've never even touched a shovel in my life.🙈

Donna Taylor68 said:The funniest part is when my buddies ask why I’m always glued to my PC—as if they wouldn't rather just "hang out in person" 🤣 as if! 😍
Question: where does this all end up long-term?

Amen to that. I’ve officially lost it if I’m preferring my digital life over the real one.

Maybe it just comes with age. I’m 40 now and, for the most part, life is good. But whenever I let my mind wander into "what if" territory, I always end up picturing myself on some deserted island, completely cut off from everyone else. It honestly surprises me how much I've drifted toward this almost antisocial lifestyle. People—whether they're close friends or just acquaintances—have always been perfectly decent and cooperative toward me. I noticed this shift starting about 20 years ago, and it's only intensified lately.
The issue is probably that I’m not the type to complain. Most of my interactions basically boil down to me just listening to whoever is talking (and lately, I’m mostly just tuning them out). I guess people assume I’m actually enjoying the company, so they keep pushing for these hangouts.
Or maybe I've just turned into a bitter old cynic.

It’s not quite that extreme, but I’ve noticed a shift. People—society in general—have become almost intolerably dull and uninteresting compared to how things used to be.
I manage to fake enough interest to maintain polite conversation because, frankly, these social interactions are a necessity. But it’s exhausting. It drains me.
Even my own family is starting to treat me like a grouch because I can’t stop pointing out everyone else's mistakes—and my own.
In my own head, I actually think I’m being far too tolerant, but clearly, those around me don't share that delusion. They’ve even told me, as bluntly as it sounds, that they find me somewhat intimidating.

Is there an actual diagnosis for this, or am I just not providing enough context?
