Well, the guys who put my computer together actually installed Windows 7 for me. The thing is, I don't have the original installation disc for it anymore.

So, what's actually the deal with a full Windows reinstall being better than just using System Restore?

Noah Sanchez39 said:You can run both Malwarebytes and Norton at the same time without any issues. They don't clash or tank your performance; they play nice together. 😁 (I’m actually running McAfee instead of Norton myself)

Besides using an Ethernet connection, you should probably consider an external hard drive—do you even have a backup for those "roughly 50 gigs of critical data" lying around somewhere? Or maybe look into cloud storage (pro tip: Mega)

Wait, I can just dump everything onto Mega? Is that actually a safe way to back things up?
Once I've uploaded it all there, am I good to just wipe my hard drive clean?

Run a deep scan using an antivirus tool along with Malwarebytes. Once you've finished moving whatever files you need over to the laptop, I’d definitely suggest running another scan on the laptop just to be safe and make sure nothing hitched a ride.

But how much can I actually trust these scanning programs? Also, is it okay to run Malwarebytes at the same time as Norton?

The easiest route might just be connecting the desktop and the laptop with an Ethernet crossover cable and turning on file sharing for the hard drive you're pulling data from.

Are there any other ways to do this? To be honest, I really don't want to waste money on a cable that I'm only going to use once..

So, I’m getting a brand-new laptop for my 18th birthday. Once that arrives, I’m planning to move my current desktop over to the spare room. Here’s the situation: I have about 50 gigs of really important files on my current machine that I need to migrate to the new laptop, and once they're safe, I want them wiped from the old one entirely. My current PC is about three years old now, and honestly, it’s a total mess—loaded with malware, viruses, and who knows what else. I definitely don't want to accidentally infect my shiny new laptop during the transfer. Plus, I’m looking to do a full factory reset on the old computer once everything is settled.
