glupinickname said:I can definitely vouch for that—it was actually the very first anime I ever watched.
I felt the exact same way. To be honest, I was feeling pretty cynical about Japanese animation in general because of some of the more grating stuff out there—like Pokémon, for instance. But Little Chihira's Adventure completely blew me away. And, just like Abraxas mentioned, it really does have those dreamy, surreal vibes reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland.
If my memory serves me correctly, there’s a flashback set back in the '70s in the third installment where O.J. Simpson looks exactly like this: 🙂
(Ha! I finally found the actual context for that smiley face!)
It’s nearly impossible to capture the true essence of this in writing—you really need to hear the grating, off-key vocals to get it—but since you’ve all seen the movie, the scene should be burned into your memory:
Leslie Nielsen's girlfriend: "Sam, play our song. Just one more time."
Sam: "Ding, dong, the witch is dead, the wicked witch, the wicked witch..."
😁 😁 😁
I can't recall all ten of them off the top of my head, so I'll just mention a few:
Regarding those mentioned—I definitely agree on Twin Peaks and The Diplomat.
The English Patient—that specific blend of jazz, strange Canadian folk songs, and moody orchestral pieces really blew me away.
Gladiator—honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of the movie itself, but the soundtrack? Absolutely stunning.
That 70s Western featuring music by Leonard Cohen (I've completely blanked on the title... does anyone happen to remember it?)
"Red Corsair," that 1960s adventure flick starring Burt Lancaster: I remember seeing it constantly on TV growing up and absolutely loving it back then—but then I tried revisiting it once as an adult, and honestly? It was just terrible.😢
