Hi there!
I’m looking for a little bit of guidance here. My annual digital certificate subscription expires on November 15th every year. The IRS just sent over an invoice for the base amount $130 plus sales tax. Here’s the kicker: I’m currently in the middle of closing down my LLC through that streamlined process they introduced back in April 2019, which should wrap up by December 31st, 2019. Since the business will technically be considered closed at that point, even though I still need to file certain forms (like those for the Treasury or other filings), am I stepping into any legal gray areas if I keep my access to the e-filing portal active? I tried calling TaskRabbit for some clarity, but they couldn't really give me a straight answer. Does anyone have any advice or similar experiences? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Please excuse the sudden intrusion. I was filing my Democratic Party paperwork electronically and realized I completely blanked on entering the number of employees—so right now, it’s sitting at zero. My contact over at the IRS told me that when I submit the updated version, I need to be careful not to let them think it's a duplicate filing, but rather an official correction to the original Democratic Party form. Since this is my first time navigating this particular hurdle... could someone point me in the right direction? Basically, instead of starting a brand new filing from scratch, should I just pull up the one I already sent from the list of submitted forms, strip the digital signature so I can make the edits, re-sign it, and send it back out? Is that the right way to play it? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Jack Young, thanks a million!👍 I’d rather not go digging through that digital manual again... "The lady at the IRS"? Honestly, people say a little bit of sarcasm is just a sign of a healthy brain.

Hey there... It's been about two years since I last messed around with this, so my memory is a bit rusty. I just headed over to the FBI this morning to hand over the Power of Attorney to an Authorized Representative to set up a new Proxy... Now, I'm wondering: do I just sit tight and wait for them to update the application on their end, or am I supposed to go in and log the change myself? I've been poking around, but I honestly can't see where to do it.

Thanks for the tip... yeah... and that bit about the green checkmark is actually super helpful. I didn't quite catch that you had to click it at first glance

Hey there. Is anyone else here running into a bit of a snag with this new online portal? I’m trying to get my digital signature on the ID form, but the system keeps throwing an error saying it's "unsigned." It’s like a stubborn mule refusing to budge. Does anyone know what the catch is? I'd really rather not spend my afternoon scrolling through endless PDF manuals or playing phone tag with the IRS. Thanks in advance!

Henry Chavez5... man, thanks so much for that walkthrough! It was a lifesaver. Vitasica also deserves a huge shoutout for helping me sort out that whole IP.xml situation. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do without you guys.

I just successfully submitted my ID and VAT return for January 2013 through the IRS portal. As a service provider, I have a few clients who recently filed powers of attorney with the IRS, so I’m officially authorized now. Can someone walk me through what the first step is this time when I'm filing forms for those clients? Is it as simple as, say, opening the VAT form and just deleting my own Tax ID and Company Name in the header to type in the client's Tax ID and Name instead, followed by their specific data? Or am I supposed to perform some other action first? I'm a bit lost here... thanks in advance!

I could really use some help here.
I just decided to switch over to digital tax filing this week.
I got my USB drive and encrypted PIN from FINRA, but I’m hitting a massive wall trying to get everything installed.

I downloaded the tax software directly from the FINRA site. But once I open it, the program won't recognize my certificate—it doesn't even show up as an option when I try to load it.
On top of that, when I attempt to decrypt the PIN, I keep getting an error saying "cryptographic device support is not installed."
I've been wrestling with this for two days now and I'm honestly at my wits' end.
The instructions mention that if the certificate isn't recognized, I should run an app called "ActivCard Gold Utilities." Does anyone know where I can actually download that?

Help, please.

I'm a bit pressed for time so I can't dive deep into every single detail, but this info is useful for everyone because these hurdles pop up constantly when you're starting out:
1.
If you are installing the IRS application with your token or card plugged in, and instead of seeing "Publisher: IRS" in the window, it says "Publisher: Unknown Publisher," then you have a problem with the RDC root certificate installation:

Here is what you need to do:
Go to this page:

Scroll down to the section: RDC CA root certificate | Certificate Download | Public Directory Search. Select the Verification/root (self-signed) certificate for the RDC CA.

Select Open. Then click "Install certificate" -> "Next" -> "Place All certificates in The Following Store". Click Browse. Make sure to check Show physical stores.

Choose "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and "Local Computer"

Note: If you can't see "Local Computer," just select "Trusted Root Certification Authorities." Hit "OK," then "Next" -> "Finish"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Even after fixing the "unknown publisher" issue, if you still can't get the IRS software running and you see a pop-up like this:

"Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly Microsoft Web Services 3 version 3.0.0.0. be installed in the global assembly cache (GAC) first"

Run the installation for the Microsoft WSE 3.0 Runtime from their website.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Click DOWNLOAD and follow the setup prompts.

Once that's done, try installing the IRS software again.

Henry Chavez5 said:You always use the business's EIN, not your personal Social Security number. The only exception is if you're a sole proprietor, in which case your business tax ID and personal ID are one and the same.

Anonymous said:So, I’ve got everything installed and ready to go, but I hit a wall when it comes to importing my certificates. Even though my USB token is plugged directly into my computer, nothing shows up in the list. Has anyone run into this before? Any advice on what I might be missing?

Have you tried step number two from my post on the previous page? It might be worth a shot. In my experience, that's often the culprit behind these kinds of hiccups.

Alright... let's dive into this. Since I’m currently neck-deep in paperwork, I have a question about how things work with the IRS. When my accounting service—basically my firm—draws up a Power of Attorney for a client, who actually counts as the principal here? Is it the firm itself, or am I acting as the individual? Whose Tax ID gets entered on the forms? When I look at my own primary Power of Attorney filed with the tax authorities, my company is listed as the principal, and I'm just the agent. So, if I'm reading this right, since Microsoft doesn't provide pre-set templates that always fit perfectly (honestly, dealing with US bureaucracy is a bit of a moving target, isn't it?), when we set up a Power of Attorney with another client, under the "principal" section, it should be my full name, but instead of my personal Social Security number, I use my business EIN . Am I hitting the mark here? Or am I totally off base?

Hey everyone! How's it going?

I’ve put together something pretty useful for anyone just starting out with our online government services. If you're running into any roadblocks while trying to get the IRS Portal application installed, this should clear things up for you.

1.
If you're trying to set up the IRS Portal app from the official government site and you've got your security token or card plugged in, keep an eye on that pop-up window. If you see "Publisher: Unknown Publisher" instead of "Publisher: IRS," then we’ve hit a snag. It’s like trying to start a car with a faulty ignition—it just won't catch. What you're actually looking at is a hiccup with your RDC root certificate installation.

I'm ready to get to work. Just send over the content you need me to transform, and I'll handle the rest.
Open the page: If you're looking to get things sorted with the IRS, you can head over to their official portal right here: http://rdc.irs.gov/

Scroll down to the section labeled RDC CA root certificate under the Certificate Download / Public Directory Search area. From there, you’ll want to select the self-signed verification/root certificate for the RDC CA.

Go ahead and select Open. From there, just hit "Install certificate," then click "Next." You’ll want to choose the option that says "Place All certificates in The Following Store." Once you do that, click Browse and make sure you check the box to show physical stores.

Make sure you select both "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and "Local Computer."

Just a quick heads-up: if you don't see the option for Local Computer, don't sweat it—just go ahead and select Trusted Root Certification Authorities instead. Hit "OK," click "Next," and then you're all set once you hit "Finish." It's like choosing the main course over a side dish; sometimes you just have to take what's on the menu!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if you manage to sort out that pesky "unknown publisher" error, you might still run into a bit of a roadblock while trying to get the IRS Portal set up. If things aren't clicking into place, you could find yourself staring at a pop-up window that looks exactly like this:

It looks like you’ve hit a bit of a snag. I'm seeing an error message stating that the app won't install or run because it’s hunting for the Microsoft WSE 3.0 Runtime. Apparently, it needs that specific assembly tucked away in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) before it can even get off the ground. It’s a bit like trying to start a classic car without the right spark plugs—you can turn the key all day, but nothing is going to happen until that specific part is in place. You'll likely need to grab that runtime and get it installed first to clear the path.

Go ahead and get that Microsoft WSE 3.0 Runtime installation rolling by grabbing it directly from the website. It’s a straightforward process, much like following a clear recipe—just download and execute.

If you're looking to get things running smoothly, you might want to grab that Microsoft WSE 3.0 Runtime. It’s a bit like making sure your car has the right coolant before a long road trip—it's one of those small details that prevents a much bigger headache down the line. You can find the download right here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Just hit that DOWNLOAD button and follow the installation steps provided. It's pretty straightforward!

Once you've finished that installation, give the IRS Portal another shot. It should behave much better after the setup is complete.

I really hope this helps someone out there. Everything's looking good on my end!

Hey there! Has anyone else run into a wall while trying to get the IRS Portal application set up online? I’m hitting a snag where it keeps telling me that all the necessary Treasury pre-requisites aren't installed—it's flagging them as "unknown publishers"—even though I’ve gone through the motions and installed everything. I even decrypted the certificates on my token and ran everything from the disc, plus grabbed all the extra stuff from the official IRS support page, but I'm still getting the exact same error. It feels like a bit of a loop. I was wondering if it might be easier to just head down to a local IRS office in person? To be honest, I haven't really looked into how that process works. Could the fact that I haven't received all the official paperwork from the IRS be the reason I can't get this application to take? And what about using an electronic signature? There isn't much info out there about that... does anyone have a quick guide or some advice they could share?

Hey there, Vitasica fans and everyone else... thank goodness I'm not blowing up your notifications quite as often lately. But, hey, you can't stay quiet forever! I wanted to pick your brains on something. When dealing with pretty small-scale clients, I used to just hand over the Intel data manually on paper last year. Even with a bit of grumbling from the IRS, they accepted it without much fuss. Now, I'm hearing whispers that this year, everything absolutely has to be submitted via Excel on a digital medium. So, two questions for the group: 1. Is that actually true? 2. If it is, I am completely lost looking at these forms on the IRS website... does anyone here have any insight or perhaps some clarity?
(If you could keep it brief so I don't hog too much of your time)
Best regards!

Thanks!

Happy Easter, everyone! I really want to send a huge thank you to Underhood, Vitasica, and Lili P. for all the hard work and the helpful answers they've provided. Hopefully, I won't be bothering you all again until late autumn.
