Bank account frozen: What should I do? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Richard Perez3 said:Just don't fall for that whole "it's so unfair" trap and end up handing her your cash just so she can scrape by. 😉

Even if I wanted to lend her cash, I'm broke myself!😂

Besides, it’s not actually that bad. She went down to the bank and filed the paperwork to set up a protected account, so she'll receive two-thirds of her paycheck there, while the rest goes toward the blocked account until everything is paid off. They also informed her that the total debt is actually $3400, which isn't the $15,000 she originally thought...

All things considered, it's manageable. We all know that eventually, everything catches up to you. The only thing making it complicated is this whole protected account process; I read online that it takes forever, but the lady at the bank told her it would only take two or three days... we'll see about that.👍

Steven Reed said:It’s honestly appalling to me—it’s just wild—that someone could rack up a debt of $5000 on a salary of $1333, and then, instead of calling their credit card company to negotiate a payment plan or even attempting to secure a loan to clear 🤷, they just sat there letting it fester until their accounts were frozen. Like, the collections process had already kicked in at that point.

Google... you see, there are all kinds of people out there.

Capital One actually reached out to her and they agreed on a reasonable installment plan, which she just failed to stick to... so yeah, they're going to collect eventually. Regarding your point, I agree; I can't wrap my head around how anyone lets it get to this stage either.

But on the flip side, it doesn't sit right with me that someone goes five months without seeing a paycheck because of this. Why can't they just take their third and leave the rest available for the person? In the end, they just make everything so unnecessarily complicated by forcing you to open a secondary account. It's maddening.

This feels like it’s going to spiral out of control... a friend just told me her account was frozen because she owes money on her Discover card... it's brutal.

Can she even take out a loan to cover that debt if her account is locked?

Or is she just stuck? How is she supposed to survive? This is a debt of $5000 and she only makes about $4,000 a month—once you factor in legal fees, we're looking at roughly $20,000. Does this mean she'll be without any income for five months?😲
