Bank account frozen: What should I do? in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Thanks, everyone!

darkmaker94 said:Bank of America lets you run a negative balance for up to 6 months. If they just bumped up your limit, you've basically got a 6-month window before they reconsider it. You can also check the exact expiration date on your current overdraft limit right through the Chase Mobile app. 🙂

Right, so they did re-approve it. The timing was just... well, impeccable, if you consider bad timing "impeccable." It happened right as my one-year employment contract was wrapping up. Since I had filed my paperwork with the IRS, they actually gave me an even higher overdraft limit back then. Now, I've signed a new fixed-term contract for six months. So, am I essentially in the clear for the next six months—meaning, until this current overdraft limit expires?

Thanks

Thanks for the input, everyone. I’m really hoping things play out that way—I mean, if they actually freeze my account until I hit zero, we’re looking at a total disaster. My plan was to set aside maybe a third, possibly even half, of my paycheck just to keep enough in my checking account to dig myself out of this hole as fast as possible.

So, here’s the deal with Bank of America... it’s a bit of a mess, really. After a full year on the job, my contract just expired—basically, they let me go. Then I spent a month sitting around unemployed, only to finally sign a new six-month contract recently. The pay is exactly the same, which isn't exactly a victory lap, but whatever. The problem is, the bank hasn't processed anything yet. No reaction, no movement. Now I'm looking at a massive hole in my income this month. Just one of those things, I suppose.
What’s the consensus here? Is it worth my time to go out and pay for a consultation?

Hey there. I could really use some advice on a situation I've found myself in. It’s a bit of a long one, but it’s pretty straightforward.

So, I was working a steady job for about a year. I was an intern at a major corporation—got my Master’s degree and all that. My salary was $1667. Given my field and what I was pulling in, Bank of America approved an overdraft limit of $5000. Then, life happened. A massive, totally unexpected expense popped up (I won't get into the details, honestly...), and a few months back, I ended up dipping into the red by -$4000.

Fast forward to the end of my one-year term (which passed two weeks ago)—they decided not to renew my contract. Right now, my account is sitting at a deficit of -$4000. I’ve already filed everything with the IRS to make sure I’m set for unemployment benefits since I qualify.

But here’s the twist: I actually landed a new gig. It’s a private firm in my field, and while it’s only a six-month contract, it’s a start. The pay will be $1333. Now comes the dance of filing the paperwork with the IRS... to wrap up the benefits and sign the new contract.

The whole thing has moved incredibly fast—less than a month from start to finish. Interestingly, the bank hasn't given me any trouble with ATM withdrawals; in fact, they actually bumped my overdraft limit from $15,000 up to $6667. I assume they think my original contract was extended or something.

Here is my actual question: In about fifteen days, I won't have a paycheck hitting my account because of this gap between jobs. Is the bank going to freeze my account or block me? How do they view a short-term, six-month contract? My plan is to clear this debt as quickly as possible and I have zero intention of using the overdraft again, but I really need access to at least half my paycheck just to survive the month. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.
