Bank account frozen: What should I do?
in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Hi everyone, I’ve run into a serious issue following my debt discharge. My checking account has been frozen since 2011, and during that entire stretch, the bank kept hitting me with fees until they drove me into a negative balance. Since I was unemployed, there was obviously no money coming in, yet they called me constantly demanding payment for debts I didn't even incur. Eventually, I went down to the branch to check my status and close the account now that the freeze was lifted. They told me quite nicely that if I wanted to close my protected account, I first had to settle the overdraft. Now, it turns out I'm on a blacklist, and even if I pay off that unauthorized negative balance, they claim they can't unfreeze my account because of some ongoing legal proceeding. I never received any notice regarding a lawsuit; I just assumed the account was inactive due to the freeze. I am genuinely wondering who I can contact about this negative balance and why I was added to a blacklist without any notification. Am I really expected to pay them for mistakes they made, along with interest and legal fees? It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest I should pay the overdraft just to get my account unfrozen. Has anyone dealt with something like this? I am truly at a loss for what to do next.
