I feel this constant, gnawing anxiety in basically any social situation.
That class might act as a major trigger for you. Given that you are dealing with social anxiety, it might be wiser to start with something you can practice privately at home.
There are many ways to find calm; have you tried yoga or meditation? It might be helpful to try some techniques in the comfort of your own home to help you connect with your inner self. I suggest practicing breathing exercises so that when you eventually face an alarming situation, your body won't react quite as intensely. 🙂
Personally, I haven't struggled with social phobia, though I have dealt with stage fright. One thing I realized—which may apply to you as well—is that what starts as social anxiety, with the racing heart and trembling hands, is a physical and mental response. Eventually, these issues tend to pile up. It becomes very difficult to tackle them if you try to focus on every single symptom individually. I would recommend speaking with a psychologist; there are many different types available in the US. Try to find someone who can help you uncover the root cause of these feelings. Once you understand the origin, you will begin to see these moments as mere symptoms rather than the core problem.
On a lighter note, please know that so many Americans struggle with social anxiety. Stay brave and do not give up; don't let that little devil on your shoulder keep whispering nonsense to you.😉
