Wage garnishments and collections

Hey everyone,
So, I just finished up some contract work for a company that’s currently sliding straight into bankruptcy proceedings.
The reality is, they don't have a dime left to pay anyone.
There’s a way to file a formal claim through the court to get what's owed, but there’s already a massive line of creditors ahead of me—and let's be honest, they look much more likely to see a cent than I am.
To make matters worse, from everything I'm seeing, it looks like once this whole legal mess wraps up, the company is just going to vanish into thin air.
What I'm trying to wrap my head around is how a bankruptcy case actually closes if there are still outstanding debts hanging over it?
Is it actually legal to just pile up debt like this, shutter the doors, and walk away without paying a single soul?
