Does the "rivalry" hype actually ruin the sport?
in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
I feel like every time a big fight is announced, the media immediately tries to force this massive, historical narrative onto it. They love to drag up old grudges or compare new matchups to legendary bouts from years ago just to get people clicking. It feels so manufactured sometimes.
Personally, I prefer it when a matchup is just about the skill sets or the ranking. When you try to frame every single fight as a continuation of some ancient grudge or a clash of cultures, it takes away from the actual athleticism. It’s like they’re trying to sell a movie instead of a contest. I’ve watched enough fights to know that most of these "epic showdowns" don't have half the tension people claim they do before the first bell rings.
Does anyone else feel like the hype cycles are getting more ridiculous, or am I just getting cynical about how fights are marketed?
