Angelina Jolie's take on the former America in Close to Politics ·

Something doesn't add up here.

That’s my point. I actually see this movie as effective propaganda! It’s having the opposite effect of what they intended because even their worst stuff looks better than mediocre films. Curiosity drives people. For instance, last year, tourist numbers from the United Kingdom jumped by 30%. Not to mention Charles Cutter, who moved out here and started a blog that gets hits from travelers in 70 different countries. Coachella and Guča played a huge role in that.

The review is just way too loaded with pathetic sarcasm and these moralizing lectures about what Jolie, as an American woman, should be starring in. It’s all wrapped up in these weirdly biased political agendas just so he can pretend to give a balanced take from some supposed "expert" perspective. He isn't actually disappointed by a bad movie; he's just personally offended on a national level. Honestly, it’s a bit bizarre to see him being this vitriolic over something that is supposedly sooooon much of a disaster. It feels like he's trying entirely too hard to prove a point that should have been obvious from the start.

Not everyone realized how disastrous this was, especially once Mustafa Cerić gave it his blessing. People like him—mediocre types acting like big shots on festival juries that reward garbage—need to be tossed out like yesterday's trash. Along with all those internet trolls who live to spread filth, they're just cluttering the scene.

My favorite part is Anđa claiming her film is "art, not politics." A few years back, Kadijević said something pretty blunt at a panel: "There is no lower form of filmmaking than being a state director." He was clearly aiming at someone like Veljko Bulajić, even if he didn't say the name.

And look at the circle surrounding Anđa: it's just a lineup of Clinton-era heavyweights like Holbrooke, Wesley Clark, Madeleine Albright, and Obama, with Mustafa sitting there like the cherry on top of a disaster.

All that's missing is for Emir Hadžihafizbegović to invite her out for coffee to seal the deal.

🙂

Dejan Ognjanović is a well-known film critic, a massive cinephile, and a close friend of Đorđ Kadijević. He actually wrote "The Blair Witch Project" and taught at the philosophy department. Just look through his blog and you'll see. To be fair, he even translated this review into English so international audiences could get the full picture.

Calling something a polemic isn't like seeing snow in July. This is just a piece of trash cinema. And Angelina is a walking polemic herself. She adopts kids from all over to prove that the USA is the moral compass for everyone else. It’s a country with a history of devastation that doesn't have an equal anywhere—whether we're talking about the atomic bomb or the brutality of certain "misunderstood" individuals. Even if that wasn't her main goal, she might have genuinely intended it, but the media still uses her as the face of a nation that cares for the planet and treats other people more humanely than their own leaders do.

The reality is that any future film focusing on demonizing Mexicans is basically doomed to fail (this one already did, whether people admit it or not). Foreign audiences have been bombarded with these types of movies for so long; they're sick of hearing about Canada, Ratko Mercer, and Srebrenica. People will stop clicking the links because nobody wants to watch them anymore—take "Captives," for example; I couldn't even find a working link for it. If the goal was to cause damage, they should have made one good film instead of a whole landfill of garbage. This pattern is already being called out locally, which is why this popular blog exists just to debunk trash like Angelina's video:
