Can a name cause trauma?
in Psychology ·
After reading through all the posts here, I’ve come to the conclusion that everything really hinges on the specific name itself. For instance, my name is quite traditional—certainly old-fashioned—but it isn't unattractive, and I have never once been teased because of it. My only real struggle was during my youth, back when friends used to scrawl their names on school desks; since most of them had very common, trendy names, I felt a certain hesitation. At that age, one begins to realize that a name can carry its own weight. To me, my name always felt far too serious. I never encountered anyone my own age with a name like mine, nor have I met anyone in the years since. Still, I truly love my name. I find it quite amusing when people raise an eyebrow and ask, "Wait, how do you spell that?" or "Is that your real name?" Once I repeat it, they usually just remark that it is a very "strong" name... whatever that is supposed to mean.
