Why does everyone treat high schoolers differently?

Why does everyone obsess over being "intellectually superior"? It feels like the whole conversation just turns into an ego trip about who's smarter, who's more academic, or who studies harder.
Personally, I have way more respect for people who might not be geniuses but actually put in the work to build a good life. It beats those self-proclaimed intellectuals who just talk just to hear themselves speak...
