CPU operating temperatures? in Hardware ·
Greetings,

I picked up a new laptop about four months ago—a Dell Inspiron 15. It’s running an Intel Core i5-4210U 1,7Ghz processor, an NVIDIA GeForce 940M, and 8GB of RAM. I have a bit of a question regarding heat—the manual mentions a maximum operating temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. Right after getting it, I installed Open Hardware Monitor to keep an eye on things. When I'm just watching movies or letting it idle, the temperature stays steady around 40 degrees. If I start working in MATLAB (Simulink), SolidWorks, or AutoCAD, it climbs to about 50 or 60 degrees—which seems perfectly fine to me. However, when I fire up something like Resident Evil 5, the temperature jumps to anywhere between 75 and 85 degrees—and honestly, that feels a little high. I was hoping to get some insight from the more tech-savvy folks here—is this range acceptable or should I be concerned? Just as a side note, I keep the laptop sitting on a cooling pad.

Thanks in advance. Have a wonderful day.
I don't really use this laptop for gaming—SolidWorks tends to struggle whenever I try to work on more complex 3D models. I definitely feel like I need a beefier graphics card, but a new laptop or desktop just isn't in the budget right now. Thanks for the input regardless!
Hello there,

Forgive me if this sounds like a bit of a silly question—I'm just curious—but how can I tell if a laptop's graphics card is integrated or not? If it isn't built-in, would I actually be able to swap it out? To be specific, I'm working with a Dell Inspiron 3542. It currently has an Nvidia 820m 2GB inside, and based on what I've read online, I suspect it might not be soldered on—meaning a replacement could be possible. If that's the case, could I upgrade it to an Nvidia 840m 2GB, or perhaps even an 860M 2GB? Thanks in advance for any insight you can share.

Have a nice day.

And sorry again if this was a foolish thing to ask.

Does anyone know of a specific software for calculating things like gear ratios or shaft specs?
I absolutely loathe building these spreadsheets manually in Excel—and while I know it’s possible, I’ve realized I can do it—😍but honestly, typing out every single calculation is just tedious work. Can anyone point me toward a tool that might handle this? 🙂

Thanks in advance! 🙂
