The "off the record" trap in high-stakes careers
in Politics ·
I was thinking today about how much the concept of "privacy" has shifted for people in the public eye. It used to be that if you were sitting down for a memoir or a deep-dive interview, there was a certain level of unspoken trust between the subject and the person recording them. You could vent, you could be casual, and you could assume the walls had ears, but the recording was just for the draft.
Now, it feels like every single conversation is a potential liability. It makes me wonder if anyone in a position of power actually speaks candidly anymore. I see it all the time in political dramas, but in real life, the "off the record" buffer seems to be evaporating. It’s getting harder to distinguish between a person just talking through their thoughts and someone being reckless with what they know.
Do you think the era of the "unfiltered" private conversation is officially dead because of how easily things can be surfaced later?
