I truly believe that doctors are being dishonest with us, essentially acting as accomplices to Big Pharma by using patients as nothing more than raw material for their most brutal clinical trials...

We all go through it at some point—some people deal with psychosis, others struggle with depression, and everyone eventually finds themselves navigating various other disorders... we all have our own history with these things. As for me, even today, I remain deeply skeptical about the efficacy of medication and the way these chemicals aggressively interfere with the brain and the nervous system...

I caught a segment on TV last night featuring an American specialist who argued that the best way to tackle mental illness isn't through a heavy reliance on medication, but rather by successfully treating the root causes through intensive talk therapy alone. I’m honestly kicking myself for not catching his name so I could look him up online... but I find myself leaning quite heavily toward his philosophy...

All I can speak to is my own personal experience with the medications I've been prescribed. For me, they work perfectly well, and frankly, I have absolutely no interest in entertaining alternative treatment methods... 🤷

Laura Castillo6 said:Wait, how can you be so sure? Like, how am I even supposed to tell if something is actually a symptom of the condition itself? It feels much easier to spot side effects from meds since most of them are clearly listed in the little paper inserts they give you at the pharmacy, but this part is just a guessing game.🤔

I honestly can't say for sure, because symptoms can stem from just about anything and I'm certainly no doctor to be making definitive claims, but I speak from my own lived experience having navigated these exact same waters...

Anxiolytics were what finally gave me some relief in that regard...

Those are classic symptoms of anxiety

I’m currently capping my daily dose at 0.5mg of Xanax, and honestly, I don't think I even need that much anymore... I'm actually planning on tapering down from there quite soon

The only way is to find a private contractor, though obviously, that comes with a hefty price tag...

The Xanax is just there to bridge the gap—it'll handle the anxiety while you're getting adjusted to the Effexor. Once you've settled into the new medication, you won't be needing the Xanax anymore.

Fine, thanks a lot for the advice 🙂

Gerald Torres2 said:With Wellbutrin, you should start feeling a shift in your mood and energy levels after about a week; you might even find it easier to fall asleep at night. But you have to give it time. You generally need at least two weeks before any antidepressant really kicks in, and axanax can help bridge that gap. During those first five days, I was taking 0.5 mg of Xanax three times a day... after that, I didn't need it daily anymore, just as needed. Eventually, I moved off Xanax entirely and now just take Klonopin occasionally.
If 0.25 mg feels too strong, try breaking a Xanax pill in half and taking that instead. Give it a shot. You're the one living in your body, so you know best how to handle it—just make sure you're doing all of this under your psychiatrist's supervision.

The issue isn't the Xanax, it's the Effexor. I was prescribed capsules, which means I can't exactly split them up to take half today and half tomorrow. That doesn't seem like a great way to go about it. Or am I missing something?

Xanax is what keeps me relaxed enough to actually survive the day, or rather, the night. Getting decent sleep is my priority. Once I've slept, I can manage to function somehow...

Will this Effexor actually help me wean myself off the Xanax? And has anyone else here dealt with depressive episodes after being on an antidepressant for a long stretch?

Gerald Torres2 said:It looks like you're having some trouble getting your Velafax dosage right.
Think of it like a lift—it provides that upward momentum, much like the Wellbutrin I’m currently on. Actually, if we’re being honest, Wellbutrin is a much more powerful engine. And just like what you described, you can't exactly just quit cold turkey; mine is on a gradual release formula. I had to jump straight to the full dose from the start. Those first four or five days were rough, though—I was incredibly irritable and dealing with some serious anxiety. But once it finally kicked in, those issues just vanished. They recently bumped my dosage up to 300 mg, and surprisingly, I haven't felt any side effects at all.

For me, taking just one pill sent me into a complete tailspin. I'm talking intense paranoia about whether my ex would find someone else, wondering what I'd ever do without her, dealing with these horrific nightmares, and then waking up thinking everything was fine—that we hadn't even broken up—only to be slammed by heavy depression and anxiety all over again.

I felt absolutely terrible. If this is just how the first few days go, then fine, maybe I could power through it somehow...
But what happens down the road? How does it actually work? What am I realistically looking at here? Is my mood actually going to lift? Will I finally be able to get back to doing the things I love?

Honestly, I have no idea what to expect or how my headspace is going to settle...

Some actual firsthand experience would be incredibly helpful right about now...

Do you think it’s a mistake to hold off on starting the AD for just a moment, perhaps until I can finally get my head straight and this absolute chaos at work settles down? I really don't want to make some catastrophic error that might actually cost me my job... Yesterday, I was a complete wreck at the office, barely managing to pull off even the most basic tasks expected of me.

boldnomad45 said:You aren't taking this episode seriously enough. My advice? Start on Prozac to handle the depressive side, begin therapy for ADHD, and look into PT. Once you’ve stabilized, then you can worry about getting back to work. If the discomfort persists, take a two-week leave of absence until your ADHD meds settle in. I don't get the logic behind popping Xanax every single day without a concrete plan. We all know how addictive that stuff is. I’ve known people who actually had to be admitted to a hospital for a long-term detox just to get off it, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. Real addicts. They deal with intense tremors, insomnia, total brain fog—some were taking ten pills or more just to function. They’d end up nodding off at their desks at work. It's a mess. You could lose your job over this kind of bullshit.

Look, I take Xanax in small amounts and strictly on an as-needed basis, exactly as I was instructed...

Two months ago, I stopped taking it entirely; my ex-girlfriend came back into my life, we spent a month together traveling for summer vacation, and I didn't take a single Xanax and truly felt no craving for them...

Even though I feel incredibly scattered right now and things are going terribly, I am not overdoing it or increasing the dosage, but rather continuing to use it only when necessary...

Right now, I'm unable to take any time off because of the current situation at the firm, which makes things a bit difficult...

I'll wait a little longer for the chaos at work to die down. I'm functioning normally at the office because I'm not relying on Xanax and my focus is entirely on my tasks, which keeps the anxiety at bay. It’s only when I get home and find myself alone that it hits me...

In any case, I'll monitor how things unfold for a while, and if I decide I can't manage without them, I'll start the tapering process and force myself through it, no matter how much it hurts...

As for alcohol, I'm abstaining for now and it's going remarkably well. I found a colleague from work to hit the gym with, and even when we hang out on weekends, seeing beer bottles sitting on tables fills me with nothing but disgust...

That garbage brought me to all these problems, and I never want to face those kinds of issues again in my entire life, so I believe I am completely finished with alcohol for good...

restlesstiger102 said:I found that taking Xanax at night worked wonders for me. I would fall asleep like a baby, though I’d have an incredibly hard time dragging myself out of bed the next morning. On those nights when I had to get up to use the restroom, I felt completely groggy, almost as if I were still under the influence of something.😍

That said, I didn't rely on it constantly; I only reached for it during those specific moments when my mind just wouldn't shut off and sleep felt impossible.
Unfortunately, my struggles aren't the kind you can fix with a quick boost of self-esteem, or by getting over a breakup, or dealing with body image issues, or feeling lonely without friends. My situation is much more profound and painful—two major life events have hit me within the last year alone—and I am left trying to figure out how to reconcile with what happened, how to accept this reality, and how to somehow move forward while carrying this persistent ache with me.

This is precisely why I feel the need to sit down with a professional. My psychiatrist prescribes pills just to keep me calm enough to drift off, but my doctor at the VA suggested I should try to find some sense of purpose again because I seem to have lost all motivation to actually live. I spend my entire day cooped up inside my house, and I'm not truly "living" in any meaningful sense of the word.

Xanax has the same effect on me. What dosage are you taking?

for me, it isn't just about the relationship I lost; there are several other things that have set me back over the last year, and I know I'll still be feeling the fallout for at least another year until everything finally stabilizes...

I really should start taking those antidepressants again when I take my vacation or something similar, because they distract me terribly at work and I can't function properly. For now, I've stopped taking them; I need to find the right moment...

Or perhaps I'll pull myself together before then, and won't even need them. I hope...

Otherwise, I take 0.25mg Xanax, one or two tablets a day, making sure to take one before bed, and I can say it helps me fall asleep.

restlesstiger102 said:I find myself wondering if this is truly considered normal behavior. What happens if an AD pushes you right over the edge during one of those moments?

I’ve been taking Misar alongside my AD. I notice that I feel a bit more subdued and quiet in the evenings now. I suppose I'll have to wait and see how things settle over the next few days.

It is perfectly normal, actually; when someone is already struggling with suicidal ideation, an antidepressant might just trigger that specific impulse to take their own life...

I don't know... I took one pill, and I still have some on me, but for now, I’m going to try to work on myself without them. If it doesn't work out, well, I'll just start drinking again. I was prescribed Xanax too, but I can't be popping ten of them a day just to feel remotely functional. Xanax just knocks me out and kills my focus, and I have a high-stakes job where I really need to stay sharp...

It’s truly tragic what a man goes through because of a woman and a bottle...🙏

How long have you been dealing with these symptoms? I need to be able to maintain some level of focus at work, but today was definitely not one of those days...

It’s honestly so bad that I’m actually hitting a deeper depression today than I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I don't think I felt this low even back when my girlfriend broke up with me... 🤦

I have this nagging sensation that I haven't truly been myself all day, almost as if I’m walking around in a heavy fog or a hangover, where everything around me feels strangely out of place... I just don't know, it's an entirely unsettling feeling...

I wonder if taking some Xanax might help mitigate the side effects...

boldnomad45 said:It’s your life, your call. Good luck. Just keep in mind that everything can come rushing back—the depression, the drinking—because nothing was actually resolved. We just hit a brief plateau. You're still the same person, stuck in the same old patterns. Same old story. But take it slow. That’s just how life goes.

And what about willpower? I know for a fact that I will never let this happen again, whether I am on medication or not...

boldnomad45 said:Look, not every therapy or pill is designed the same way. Yours is clearly meant to be taken whole; that’s just how it is. And obviously, you're going to get used to taking pills. Take it slow.

I've honestly been considering just quitting them altogether and trying to get my head straight without any help. I haven't been able to function properly at work all day today...🤦

Sure, I’d be more than happy to scale back my dosage too, but I honestly don't see how anyone is supposed to manage that with these capsules. The instructions are crystal clear about needing to swallow them whole, without exception. It’s painfully obvious that our healthcare system is failing us...

boldnomad45 said:At a general practitioner? Hard to say. My psychiatrist laid everything out for me perfectly. He even told me to call him anytime, day or night, because I was terrified of the side effects. I just followed his lead, took the meds, and things turned out fine. No one with half a brain wants to rely on pills, but you have to recognize when you can handle things solo and when you need a crutch just to function normally again. You definitely need psychotherapy, though. You've got a lot of history—trauma, alcohol, family dynamics, and the ways those patterns shaped how you survive. That's heavy lifting. You can't do it alone. Put in the work.

I saw my doctor yesterday, and he prescribed some Alventa for me to pick up at the pharmacy. He gave me the basic rundown on how to take it, or rather, he said the pharmacist would explain it to me. Well, the pharmacist just told me to take one a day.

I took one 75mg capsule yesterday, and naturally, within thirty minutes, I started feeling terrible—dizziness, nausea, and I couldn't get a decent night's sleep to save my life...

Fine, if the idea is to taper up gradually, how am I supposed to split a capsule? It doesn't make any sense to me right now...
