So, I was talking to the folks over at the Department of Commerce, and they’re claiming there's absolutely no connection there—apparently, if I set up a tutoring business, it isn't strictly limited to adults. Honestly, you just can't win... one person tells you one thing, then someone else turns around and says the exact opposite. It's enough to make your head spin.

Look, I’ve got the credentials—the degree, the actual expertise, all that jazz—so teaching foreign languages is definitely within my wheelhouse. But I honestly don't get why people assume it has to be with kids? It's not like I'm forced to follow some rigid, soul-crushing curriculum dictated by the Department of Education—I can totally design my own syllabus and use whatever methods actually work for me.
And what if we're talking about private tutoring? You can't exactly pre-package a standardized program for something like that.

So, they’re actually telling me I can't start my own small business if I want to work with kids?! Is this for real or am I just dreaming?! I was planning on doing language tutoring—for both kids and adults—but some lady at the Chamber of Commerce basically told me I could only register for adult tutoring because small businesses aren't allowed to work with minors. Like, seriously? Does anyone here actually know how this works?

Thanks for all the input!

It just feels ridiculous to me that he HAS to lease the space to me—I mean, he’s the owner, right? He can let me use the place for $0.00 or even just for $1667 if he wants to—it’s his property, so at the end of the day, it's his call.
I only asked because I kept hearing this thing about how everything has to be a formal lease, but honestly, it sounds like a total waste of time to me. Plus, a colleague of mine—who also runs her own business out of her house—told me they just signed a simple agreement with their landlord to use the space for free, and they never ran into a single issue with the IRS or anything.

Alright, here’s another one for the experts: since my business headquarters is going to be right in my own house—my dad owns the place—does he actually need to charge me rent for a single room, or can we just sign a zero-dollar agreement for the space usage?

Hey there! So, I’m thinking about launching a little tutoring and translation business—just a solo venture, really. I want to set up my official business address at my own house, so basically using my home as the headquarters. But here’s the catch: I won’t actually be teaching anyone there. My office would just be a place to handle paperwork and admin stuff, while all the actual work—like those language courses—would happen on-site with my clients, whether that's at their offices, local elementary schools, or wherever they need me. Basically, they provide the space, and I show up to do the job. Does anyone know if there are specific building codes or technical requirements my home needs to meet to serve as an official business address? Again, to be crystal clear, it’s just a home office—no students or classrooms under my roof.
Does anyone have a lead on who I should talk to for some concrete answers? Thanks!

David Mitchell4 said:That’s impossible. You can't be currently employed and enrolled in a training program at the same time. Besides, you end up paying double the contributions—wasn't that just the big debate recently?

What about if I run my own LLC? Like, if I'm just listed as the director and not officially clocked in as an employee? Do I still have to cover all those social security taxes myself, or does that get "taken care of" through the professional training program?

Hey there! So, I’m looking at launching my own little freelance gig this fall—mostly intellectual services, translation work, that kind of thing. What’s the deal with running a small business while finishing up some vocational training? I’ve got this training program lined up at a local firm, and I should be starting in about a month. While I'm in it, the unemployment office handles all my health insurance, Social Security, and those other mandatory taxes and stuff. If I pull the trigger and officially open my business in September, is that actually doable? And if it works out—assuming the government lets me get away with it—I wouldn't have to worry about paying those self-employment taxes through my own business yet, right?
