Starting a small business in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Listen, you guys really have to understand that you can't get anything off the ground without some serious love and passion behind it—that goes for opening up a small business, too.
And honestly, just like people have been saying, all that capital you’re sinking into this venture? That money is there to help *you* succeed as the owner, not to serve as a piggy bank for the government. But, look, you absolutely have to stay on top of things and know exactly what your rights are versus what your obligations are.

honestly, our whole legal system is a total joke

Look, what kind of government is going to give you permission to work or start a business if you're broke?

Those days are long gone, back when guys like Sanders and Hercegovac were buying up entire companies and everything else for basically a dollar .............
maybe go ask those folks over at the local precinct if they'll lend you a hand or give you some startup cash so you can actually get moving😵

Robert Kim said:Then there’s the whole mess of paying Social Security and Medicare taxes again (another 20% plus 15%). They calculate it based on the average salary in your specific industry—though plenty of people get hit with a 0.65 coefficient—and they tack those contributions right on top. On top of that, you're dealing with monthly tax withholdings (which fluctuates depending on what you actually do) and that mandatory "fee" for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ($33). To make matters even more complicated, your company has to provide official proof that all payroll taxes have been settled and sign off on you actually performing the work. It can get incredibly messy because, in my case, my contract explicitly states I can't engage in any business activities that compete with my employer.
The startup costs are exactly what I mentioned earlier.

If there is one silver lining at all, it's the rumor that these contributions are just advances—meaning if you overpay, you can eventually get the money back. I’ve been waiting forever for someone on this forum to give me a straight answer on this, because nobody seems able to explain how that mechanism is actually supposed to function. Check this thread:

I’m running into a nearly identical headache myself, and honestly, I think I’ve thrown in the towel on trying to do things "by the book" as a sole proprietor because the math just doesn't add up. Lately, I've been looking more into forming an LLC instead.

God, I love our beautiful country and how much it "encourages" entrepreneurship! I mean, what is the point of that damn Department of Commerce and Small Business existence? Their eBay pages are nothing but self-congratulatory nonsense that offers zero actual guidance for anyone thinking about starting a business. I couldn't care less about their partnerships, their "visionary" plans stretching out to 2067, or some fluff piece interview with their director. They are nothing but parasites that we feed, and we'll only be feeding them more if we dare to step into the world of small business.😠 😠 😠
Anyway, I might be getting a bit carried away here. Cheers...

You clearly haven't a clue how the real world works. You can't just go anywhere in the world and start a business without money; if it were actually that easy, my friend, everybody would be a millionaire.

If you actually had the drive and knew what you were doing, you'd find a way to make it happen.

I set up my own small business without any trouble at all.👍
