Starting a small business
in Business, Accounting & Taxes ·
Hey there,
I’ve been scrolling through the last ten pages trying to find an answer to my question, but I haven't found anything that actually hits the mark—so here we are:
I’m renting an apartment that isn't mine. I have a lease with the landlord, and he handles all the taxes and stuff directly with the IRS...
The thing is, I never officially registered my address at this place, and now I want to register my small business headquarters at this same address.
What’s the actual play here?
1. Do I register my residency first and then sign an addendum to the lease where the landlord gives me the green light to use the address for my business? (Does anyone have a template for an addendum like that?)
2. Or do I just scrap the current lease and sign a new one between the business and the landlord? (I called the local business bureau and they told me since a sole proprietorship isn't a separate legal entity, I can't technically sign a contract "between" the business and the owner)
3. Is there some third option? What am I missing?
Also, if I were to go ahead and register my residency at this address, what does that process look like? I've never done it before. Since the place is in Chicago, does my landlord have to show up at the Department of Justice with me, or can we handle this anywhere? Can we just fill out the paperwork, get it notarized, and then I just head down to the Department of Justice on my own?
Thanks
