Of course they can.
I just want to point out that they stopped and didn't even bother to let us know.

My parents still get them because they refuse to touch online banking. For them, it’s the only way to actually see their monthly balance or check if they've hit a negative limit.

Look, I'm not defending the banks here. They aren't untouchable, and plenty of services that used to be free a few years ago are definitely charging for them now. But everyone needs to filter through what they actually need and what they don't.
If I decide not to pay for a service that provides vital info, then being in the dark is on me, not the bank.

I've had my fair share of ups and downs with banks and tellers, too. But misunderstandings and annoying situations aren't always the bank's fault; sometimes it's just my own lack of knowledge or me misinterpreting things.

And since we're talking about overdrafts—which is basically one of the most basic services a bank offers—everyone I know who uses one knows exactly how many months the limit lasts. When the deadline approaches, they all keep a close eye on their remaining credit so they don't slip into an unauthorized deficit. Nobody treats it like a permanent right or assumes the limit won't be lowered. So, while I get why being stuck in that spot is frustrating, you can't tell me that their ignorance or lack of interest is "normal."

Besides, if they desperately need that overdraft limit restored, they can just walk into a branch and ask to have it bumped back up to the previous amount. They could ask the staff how the process works or if there's a fee involved (which, let's face it, probably costs 😁), or honestly, just check the bank's website.

That’s definitely not right. I know for a fact they just stopped sending them. There was zero notice, nothing. And my dad hasn't even stepped foot in the bank since he set up his pension account there a few years back.
He’s on one of those all-in premium packages, whatever they call them now, and the fee is $3.25 a month. We were getting statements every single month until just a few months ago, then they just vanished.

So, I was over there yesterday, looking through everything they’ve received in the last few "notices" from JPMorgan Chase, and there isn't a single mention of a negative balance. And Bank of America doesn't even send statements anymore—at least not to her, or her mother, or my dad for that matter, not in the last four months. Her pension amount hasn't budged since she started getting it; obviously, they haven't dipped into the red, at least not until the limit was lowered. Maybe there were warnings, but clearly, I'm just imagining things again. They caught on.
It doesn't really matter though, because I never actually said that their actions go against their standard terms of service.
I just wanted to point out that this whole way of doing business makes zero sense to me, but apparently, you aren't allowed to question it.

quietseal11 said:So that isn't actually a monthly transaction statement, it’s just a notification confirming a pension payment. You're mixing up your facts here.
And while we're talking about overdraft limits being lowered, according to their website:
The overdraft limit will be reduced during the next automatic processing if there's been a drop in regular deposits to your account, or if you've received warnings from the Bank due to exceeding your limit.
Basically, one of those reasons explains why her limit was cut, though I doubt they'll ever admit that.

But hey, you're totally right. The Bank is the villain here. Your friend and your mom are just poor, innocent victims of this evil Bank and its conspiracy to ruin your friend's stay in the USA, which depends on her $2000overdraft limit.
If I were in your shoes, I'd just lend her that $2000 so she can survive out there, then start a massive media outcry against the Bank. It's not their fault they don't know anything—it's the Bank's fault. After all, how is anyone supposed to be at fault when they use a service without knowing the exact terms under which it was granted or the conditions under which it can be taken away?

Whatever, don't worry about it. Last time there was drama too, when they wouldn't let me into the branch seven minutes before closing even though I had a number. Then they sent all these various apology emails and stuff.
Anyway, looks like you don't mess with the Bank.
Later.

I’m heading over to my girlfriend’s mom’s place today to break the news that JPMorgan Chase told her they’re cutting back her overdraft limit. I was trying to get her to hand over those last three bank statements, but nope, nothing.
The Bank just sends a quick notice a few days before the Social Security check hits to let you know the amount, but they don't say a single word about the overdraft situation. No account balance, no details, nothing.
I guess I’m just being an idiot. I really should’ve been paying closer attention to the fine print. 🤷

Exactly. Spot on.

That negative balance isn't even necessary. It’s just the way they handle it that creeps me out. Imagine if they didn't even bother to notify you that this was happening—it would be a total disaster. What if the amount was way higher and some girl ended up stranded in the middle of the USA with zero dollars in her account? What then?
I think I’m just going to head over to Bank of America, even if everything else stays the same. I just can't wrap my head around this, even though I'm sure it's all perfectly legal under their terms and conditions.

Not trying to start a whole new thread here, just wanted to vent about the "stellar" business practices over at JPMorgan Chase.

So, this girl relies on her dad's pension, and she was sitting at a deficit of $2000. Since she’s living in the US now, her mom was doing some home renovations and ended up dipping into her checking account at $667 to cover the costs. Instead of acting like professionals, these "experts" decided to just slash her overdraft limit on the $600 without telling a single soul. It’s a total mess. Honestly, what kind of sick way to operate is that? The worst part is her mom only found out when she went into the bank to grab another $1333 to pay those contractors. What happens if she had already withdrawn the cash, only for these clowns to lower the limit and pull $1500 straight out of her account? Now she's stuck in America with zero funds.
I don't get it. Maybe I just have a different definition of "good business," but this is pathetic. If they were going to reduce the limit and needed the difference paid, or if they were going to cause this much of a headache, they should have actually communicated. Just leave people in the dark like that...
