2. Lifespan of what, exactly? The data on the disk? Honestly, nobody can guarantee that or even give you a straight answer. I’ve got drives that sat untouched for over 10 years and I could read the data without a hitch. Then again, I've had drives die after just two weeks of use where recovery wasn't even worth the cost.
If you actually care about your data—and if you're willing to trade off some privacy—you might want to look into cloud storage. In my opinion, it's probably the "safest" bet right now when it comes to avoiding hardware failure.
For a DIY home setup, you could consider running drives in a RAID array (mirroring) if the data is really important to you.
3. Is Seagate the best based on specific specs? Personally, I'd probably go with Western Digital. Most drives these days are pretty much mass-produced, so the brand choice isn't a huge deal—unless there's word that a specific series is prone to defects, then you'd want to watch out for that.
4. Room temperature is fine. Even the heat we've been having lately should be okay. If you're going to keep the drive disconnected most of the time, you could tuck it away in a pantry or a storage closet; a slightly cooler environment won't hurt, but there's definitely no need to put it in the fridge. 😁
5. I'm not sure what kind of cleaning you mean, but if you're talking about physical cleaning, the only thing you can really do is wipe off any dust that settles on the outside. 😁
Thanks. 👍
I saw people online raving about Seagate, so I figured... Plus, I heard some folks had issues with Western Digital, so I crossed that one off the list.😁
Regarding the cleaning, yeah, I meant physical. I read somewhere that you can actually crack the casing open and blow out the dust.😁

The disk you have from your aunt is roughly $200, and honestly, SanDisk is a great brand.... though most of them are pretty much fine...
They look like this, and hey, I actually dropped one of mine off a fourth-story balcony once—luckily it was inside its plastic packaging and it didn't even skip a beat....
It doesn't really matter how often you use it, as long as you aren't leaving it plugged in 24/7, right? Obviously, if you aren't using it, just unplug it from the computer. 😬
Just keep it in a cool, dry spot like any other piece of tech, whether it's your iPhone or whatever else you own.... nothing crazy special about it, keeping it in your room is totally fine. 🤣
And there's zero reason to clean it..... dust isn't getting inside the casing anyway.
I know, right? 😁Look, I gotta ask. It’s not like we’re talking about pocket change here, right? Sure, maybe it doesn't seem like much to some people, but for anyone actually out there working a real job and collecting a paycheck, that kind of money definitely adds up. 😁
Edit: Totally blanked on the fact that I actually went with SanDisk. Just found my notes right this second:
So, I’m looking at this 1 TB Transcend StoreJet 2.5" external HDD—you know, the black one, model TS1TSJ25M3, running on USB 3.0. It's just one of those basic little drives, but honestly, does anyone actually trust these things with their life anymore?
I'm looking at picking up an external hard drive, so I could really use some pointers here.
1. Is using an external drive basically just plug-and-play, like any other USB gadget where you just dump your data and go?
2. What's the actual lifespan on these things? I can't find a straight answer anywhere, though I've seen people mention they last about four years.
I'm not planning on living out of this drive or anything; it’ll just sit there most of the time until I have a bunch of new files—photos, music, whatever—to offload from my laptop a few times a year.
3. I'm leaning towards grabbing a Seagate. Are they actually the gold standard or what?
4. I read somewhere that you need to keep these drives in a cool, dry spot. Is just leaving it at room temperature fine, or does it need to be kept even colder than that?
5. Do these things even need "cleaning"? And if so, how often are we talking?
Her memoirs were supposed to drop last year, so maybe we'll actually see these then. Plus, NBC is currently working on a documentary about Grace Jones.
Grace is still grinding away at a new album, too. There’s a real chance she might put something out this year—if it isn't a full album, it'll definitely be a single.
They’re re-releasing those Grace In disco albums as a complete set called The Disco Years. It even comes with some bonus tracks included.

Original Beast just dropped a new track for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack.
Check out this promo for the Nightclubbing reissue. It’s got a quick little teaser of "Wannabe" in there.

Patrick Martin said:It’s honestly pathetic that a legend like her gets stuck with such a trashed thread. Just shameful.
Facts.
One of the mods really needs to step up and fix the opening post here. Like, seriously, why would anyone even start a thread about a singer they don't listen to just because a specific song gets on their nerves?

Just thinking back to that 1985 Glory to the Rhythm album produced by Trevor Horn... man, what an absolute dream to listen to.
It’s just pure production perfection—the whole thing is basically one massive concept built around a single theme, taking variations on a central idea and pushing them to the limit through sheer creative genius.
Honestly, the first time I spun Glory to the Rhythm, I actually thought I’d accidentally popped in a CD single full of remixes. I was a little bummed at first that there weren't more distinct tracks, but then it hit me: this is such a bold, conceptual masterpiece.
Her disco albums are the only ones that actually suck—though I guess La Vie en Rose is worth a mention if you're feeling generous. Bulletproof Heart was her final outing in the '80s and basically marked the start of her losing her touch, but hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day, right? It still manages to squeeze in a few decent, creative moments.
A reissue of Nightclubbing, some memoirs, and even a new album on the way. 🙂She’s finally back in action.
Honestly, she and Tina Turner are pretty much the last of the true greats among Black female vocalists. As for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and the rest of them? It’s all just one big joke to me.
There’s zero individuality left in music today. Everyone plays it safe by doing the exact same thing, constantly mashing everything together with electronic beats until you can't even tell if you're listening to rock, pop, or whatever else they're calling it now.

Get ready, because a special edition of the legendary "Nightclubbing" album is dropping this year. We’re talking a massive 2-CD set here. The bonus disc is where the real magic happens, loaded with remixes and two previously unreleased tracks—"Wannabe" and "Me! Disconnect from you." Oh, and just so you know, "Me! Disconnect from you" is actually a cover of a Gary Numan track. How cool is that?
