One more thing: why does everyone equate "feelings" only with things like falling in love, sadness, despair, or hunger?
There is such a massive spectrum of emotions and traits that an emotionally intelligent person picks up on—things like joy, insecurity, excitement, anger, hatred 😠, melancholy, fatigue, boredom, apathy, indifference, enthusiasm, energy, hyperactivity, confidence, thoughtfulness, selfishness, greed, or vanity...

Through empathy, we sense someone's current state and adjust how we act accordingly. Whether that means jumping in to help, knowing when to ask the tough questions, celebrating a win together, or just knowing when to stay quiet... that's what it's all about.
If you find yourself saying, "Ugh, that sounds exhausting, I don't want to constantly overthink everything, I just don't care," you’ll probably eventually feel like you aren't vibing well with the people around you. But hey, nobody's perfect; we all slip up, we just have to try to be a little better every single day.

Honestly, reading all this is exhausting. Why should I stress about kids in the Congo going hungry? Is it just ego? Who’s being more selfish here? Who’s actually supposed to weep over someone else's struggles versus who has much more important things to deal with, like showing empathy at a funeral...
Empathy isn't just about feeling bad at a funeral; it's about understanding the people you interact with every single day. Some people are just naturally tuned in to others, some really make an effort to be, and then there are those who simply don't care to understand anyone!
It’s also vital in many professions. I studied economics and management, so I know firsthand how crucial empathy is for leaders when they're dealing with partners, employees, or bosses...

Basically, the better you get at understanding the people around you, the easier life becomes and the more successful your relationships will be.

🙂Our empathy drives almost every decision and moral judgment we make. To me, it’s the core pillar of emotional intelligence. Once you truly understand your own feelings, it becomes so much easier to read everyone else! Emotions are way more nuanced than any single word can describe, too. It’s all about picking up on those unspoken cues—a shift in tone, a facial expression, or subtle body language. If you can't read people, you're missing a huge part of emotional intelligence, which really just feels like a loss of human connection: a lack of warmth, attention, and genuine harmony.
I’d argue that empathy isn’t just about sympathy; it’s simpler than that—it’s about actually FEELING!
If someone lacks this, they’ll struggle to stay in sync with a spouse, be a reliable friend, a present parent, or even a solid teammate in business or sports.
Why is empathy always talked about only when someone is suffering? Empathy means sensing what someone is trying to convey (including through non-verbal signs), whether they are celebrating a win or dealing with a loss! If something amazing happens to you, but your inner circle can't share in that joy—or doesn't even notice you're happy—it feels just as lonely as if they hadn't understood your sadness.
