So, since I don't have a cooler right now, should I maybe grab an AMD x6 6300 instead of the x8? Like, would I still need to pick up a cooler if I went that route? And would I be able to throw an R9 280 in there too?
Hey, I'm dropping this here so I don't clutter up the forum with a whole new thread, but I really need some help figuring out a PC upgrade for gaming. My budget is sitting around $3,500-$1333, and I'm planning on hanging onto a few things from my old rig—specifically the case, my Chieftec Smart 550w power supply, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD. So, here's what I'm thinking: maybe grab an R9 270 x or an R9280 for the graphics? For the CPU, should I go with an AMD x8 8320 or an AMD x6 6300? Plus, I definitely need another 4GB of RAM. Also, if anyone knows a solid motherboard that can actually handle all that together, please let me know! But honestly, if there are better ways to spend my money or different parts entirely, I'm totally open to suggestions. Any advice at all would be huge!
Thanks everyone for all the advice and the hand you gave me! If this is how things stand, I guess I'll just grab the R7 260 x. Honestly, I only really need the rig for gaming every once in a while, so I don't see the point in dropping a ton on a brand-new CPU and GPU right now... plus, I'm really not into buying used stuff. And man, I know absolutely nothing about overclocking, so I definitely don't want to mess around with that kind of stuff either.

@mellowtiger83 glad to hear the motherboard is at least decent 😁
Thanks again for everything, seriously!
Alright, so here's the deal. My current card doesn't even support DirectX 11, and honestly, I'm dying to play some newer titles, so I'm looking to pick up something new. I'm trying to keep the budget around $500.
Here's what I'm running right now:
Intel Core 2 duo E8400 3.0 GHz Gigabyte EP35-DS3R 2
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R
2x Kingmax 2GB DDR2 400 MHz
Radeon HD 4850 512 MB Chieftec Smart 550 W
Chieftec Smart 550W
I was thinking about maybe grabbing a Radeon R9 280 or an R9 270. There's about a $100 difference between them—is the R9 280 actually worth the extra cash? Or is there some Nvidia card out there that performs better for roughly the same price? Also, will my current power supply actually handle a Radeon card? And man, be honest... is it even worth putting a beefier GPU in this rig, or should I just bite the bullet and swap out the CPU and motherboard too?
I'm a total newbie when it comes to this stuff, so I would really appreciate any help you guys can give me!
