hahaha, are you even reading this?
this isn't about opening a checking account, it's about a credit card. you CAN'T get one if there's no steady income hitting the account.
and that's just a debit card linked to your checking... used for pulling cash from ATMs.

Lonicera, did you even read what I wrote. Like I said, at Goldman Sachs you can open a credit card regardless of whether you have regular income or not. I opened one myself, and I don't have any regular income here in the States because I work abroad and my money comes from overseas. They actually suggested I get a Mastercard charge card. It’s a credit card with a one-month payment delay and zero interest. You can buy anything online with it just like a Mastercard revolving card, no real difference... I've used it countless times for online shopping. When I asked about an American Express card, they told me since I have savings with them, I could apply and it shouldn't be an issue, but in the end, I just went with the Mastercard credit card.

Give me a break... how can you say you can't open a checking account without a steady paycheck? Of course you can. Just go ask at JPMorgan Chase and see for yourself. You get a Maestro card automatically, though you can't use that for online shopping. But if you open a foreign currency account and drop $5 in there, you'll get a Visa Electron debit card right away. And if you happen to have some savings sitting in a CD, they'll hand you a Mastercard or a Visa charge card regardless of whether you have a regular income or not. The only catch is your limit is tied to whatever amount you've got tucked away, but nothing over $20 $0.00. I know this is true because it's exactly how I set mine up. I don't have any income here in the States, nor does any money come into my US accounts because I work abroad. I didn't even ask for a Mastercard, they just offered it to me. Like I said, you get that Visa Electron debit card automatically the moment you walk into the bank and deposit $5.
