So, I'm trying to beef up my Wi-Fi coverage at home using these three old TP-Link routers I had lying around, specifically some TDW8159 models.
Here’s the setup: I’ve got the first router hardwired via Ethernet into my main modem—it works perfectly fine, pushing out the full speed just like the modem does, around 16 Mbps.
Then things go downhill fast. Router #2 picks up the signal from Router #1 and broadcasts it, but the speed absolutely tanks to a pathetic 2.5 Mbps.
It gets even worse with Router #3. It grabs the signal from Router #2, and suddenly we're looking at a measly 1.5 Mbps. Basically, Router #2 lost about 14 Mbps in the shuffle, and then Router #3 loses another chunk. It's a total disaster.
I’ve got all three configured on PPPoA and PPPoE settings.
They’re all sitting on the same Wi-Fi channel (channel 11).
And yeah, I’ve manually entered the MAC address of the "parent" router into each one so they know who to talk to.
The weirdest part? This used to work! I had an extension set up with just two routers before, and the speed drop wasn't nearly this soul-crushing. But, I totally blanked on the IP addresses, so I did a factory reset on everything... and now the whole thing is completely broken.
Does anyone have any clue what the hell is going on? Why am I losing so much bandwidth with every hop?
Thanks.
Big thanks to darkowl72 for breaking everything down and helping me out here
So, since I barely ever use my gear, I finally bit the bullet and picked up a black and white laser printer with a built-in scanner—figured it’d save me the massive headache of dealing with dried-up ink cartridges every single time I actually need to print something.
Man, I seriously need to hunt down a new printer. This old piece of junk refuses to work every single time I actually need it—probably because I barely touch it anymore.
If I’m reading the situation right, a laser printer would be way better for me since I’m such an infrequent user; with this ancient thing I've got now, the ink just dries up and clogs everything whenever I try to print.
- Needs to be a color laser
- A scanner would be great too, you know, so I can actually make copies when needed.
- I don't really care about WiFi—as long as I can just plug it directly into my router via LAN, I'm good, though having WiFi wouldn't hurt.
I'll be using it super sporadically—maybe like four or five pages a month tops—but when I do need to print, it actually has to work.
And honestly, I'm rarely ever going to use the color feature.
- Ideally something budget-friendly...
Please, hit me with some solid recommendations because, let's be real, I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing here...
So, I fired up my rig today and everything actually stayed out of sleep mode instead of just cutting out on me.
I mean, weirdly enough—maybe something finally clicked? I did run a defrag on my local drive right before I shut things down yesterday, so who knows.
Fingers crossed it stays this way and doesn't pull any more stunts.
Thanks for all the help, everyone.
Later.
Alright, thanks—I'll give it a shot tomorrow
I'll hit you guys up once I know how it goes.
Joshua Stewart9 said:Just ditch that half-baked piece of junk and roll back to XP.
You’ll probably have to hunt down some drivers manually, but hey—at least it won't be absolutely nuking your CPU and eating all your RAM for no reason.
I've got 16 GB of RAM installed, but XP is only seeing 4 GB... meanwhile, I've got the exact same setup on my other rig and everything works perfectly fine.
But why the hell is it acting up like this on this one?
So, I finally got Windows 7 up and running, tossed in a handful of programs and some games, and then the OS decided to go rogue and start downloading Service Pack 1 and a bunch of other random updates on its own
Now I’m running into this weird situation where my CPU is sitting at like 20 to 30% usage while the machine is just sitting there in sleep mode
It really should be idling at maybe 1 or 2% tops, if that
Any idea what the hell I should do to fix this?
Hey everyone, I could really use some help here.
I've got two PCs hooked up to my router and they both have internet access, no problem there.
But now I'm trying to get them talking to each other—you know, actually transfer files and stuff between them...
So, when I go into My Computer and check the Network folder, I can see the other machine just fine. But the second I try to actually open it up, it starts nagging me for a username and password. When that other PC was running Windows XP, everything was smooth sailing—I could just hop in and grab what I needed without all this drama.
Now that I'm dealing with Windows 7, it's demanding credentials for everything. What am I supposed to do about this???
Is there anything else out there?
And does anyone actually know which store carries this stuff if I wanted to grab it tomorrow and just DIY the whole setup myself?
Hey everyone.
I’m slowly swapping out parts in my rig—I always find myself leaning on you guys for advice before I pull the trigger.
So, looks like my power supply finally bit the dust (probably, since the whole PC is totally dead right now)
Here’s what I’m running-
Intel Core i5-2500K
NVIDIA 1 GB GDDR5
3 hard drives
4 GB DDR3 memory
and some other bits and pieces..
The old PSU was only 400W, so I'm wondering—do I actually need to step up to something beefier for this build? Any specific brands or models you'd recommend? And where's the best place to grab one without getting ripped off?
Thanks in advance!
So, my graphics card finally showed up, but first I really need to "applaud" the guys over at Protis for their incredible "resourcefulness" and give a heads-up to anyone thinking about buying from them.
Basically, I called them up on Friday to order the card at the price of $195
I give them a ring yesterday and the guys immediately put me in a great mood—telling me the card was just sitting there waiting for me.
Alright, sounds great, right? So I head down there to pick it up, only to find out the price has changed... and yeah, it’s higher now.
When I ask them what the hell happened—since the old price is still listed online and that's what I ordered it for—they basically tell me they changed the price on the system maybe five minutes before I walked in, and there's nothing they can do about it. That's the line, anyway.
But hey, since I was already standing there, I just shut up and paid the difference.
Bravo, Protis, truly top-tier service you've got going there...
So, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered this card from Protis after you guys kept telling me it was the way to go.
Thanks for the assist...
Hey there,
I'm looking to pick up a new graphics card because my current integrated HD 4200 is basically hitting a wall—though, honestly, I'm kind of shocked at how much that little thing can actually pull off before it dies.
Basically, I'm aiming for something in the ballpark of $200
. The kid loves gaming, and since I don't want to dump a massive fortune into this, I'm looking for some solid advice so I can get the best bang for my buck.
Thanks in advance for the help...
Man, tell me about it—I went through the exact same thing
So, about 4.5 months ago, I was running Windows 7, and my copy of Alcohol 120 just wouldn't play nice—it felt like the installation was totally bunk, or maybe I just couldn't get it to take. Same deal with Nero 7, too. It was just a complete mess.
Thanks a ton!
I finally tracked it down.
So, does anyone actually have a version of Alcohol 120 that won't completely tank when you try to run it on Windows 7??
So, what you're telling me is that those older titles just won't run at all?
Hey
do all games actually run on Windows 7?
and do I really need to install DirectX?
