Man, I just picked up a new rig from Future specifically to game, but honestly, it’s perfect for everything except actually playing anything. It’s driving me insane because the crashes are totally unpredictable—it might tank after 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or it might run fine for five hours straight before suddenly dying. The games just crash to desktop without any warning, regardless of whether I’m running them on low or high settings or locking the frame rate at 60 fps. To make matters worse, yesterday the whole system froze up twice, leaving me with no choice but to hard reboot. Looking at my Task Manager, I caught two major red flags: 1. When I'm mid-game, the GPU power draw goes absolutely nuts, hitting over 90% usage at times, which makes zero sense if I'm playing on low settings. 2. My AntiMalware software is also hogging an insane amount of memory and CPU cycles for no reason. I made sure to update every single one of my graphics drivers the very first day I got it, so I really don't think that's the culprit here. On top of all that, I keep hearing this weird, sudden noise coming from inside the case, like a fan is stuttering or scraping against something. Can anyone please help a guy out? Thanks in advance. Here are the specs: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 AF (3.2/3.6GHz Boost,19MB,65W,AM4) box, Wraith Stealth ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 34, s. 1150/1155/1156/2011/2011-3/2066/AM4, black GIGABYTE B350M GA-AB350M-DS3H (S.AM4, 4xDDR4, RAID) mATX G.Skill Aegis 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16 GIGABYTE Video Card GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER GAMING OC GDDR6 6GB/192bit, MHz/14 000 MHz, PCI-E 3.0 x16, HDMI, 3xDP, WINDFORCE 3X Cooler RGB (Double Slot), Backplate, Retail GV-N166SGAMING_OC-6GD 1 Crucial BX500 480GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD 500W Power Supply, ANTEC VP500P Plus EC, ATX, 120mm vent, PFC, 80+ NaviaTec Gaming Case with 3 Colorful LED Fans - NVT-MASTER 1
I've got this absolute dinosaur of a rig sitting at home, basically the last decent gaming PC I picked up back in January 2011. 🙂 I haven't really played anything in ages, but lately, the gaming itch has come roaring back, and since I've finally scraped together enough cash—about $2000—I'm planning to pull the trigger on a new build the second my paycheck hits this Monday. I've been falling down the rabbit hole of budget builds for the last few days trying to find the sweet spot, but I figured I'd come here to get some eyes on it first. Here’s the lineup I'm looking at:
If anyone has a better idea of what I can grab for this kind of money, please speak up. 👍 (I'm planning on paying cash.)
A few quick questions: Do I actually need an extra fan or some better cooling setup? Is this case big enough to fit all these parts comfortably? Is it even smart to be mixing a GeForce card with an Intel CPU and motherboard? Should I stick with the used GPU from Craigslist, or is it worth spending maybe another $40 or so to get a brand new one? Also, if I want to burn CDs, do I need to buy a separate drive or is one built into the case?

Is what you told me back like three months ago still the absolute best way to go with this cash, or should we refresh the plan since I finally actually scraped together the funds?
Oh, and I totally blanked on asking—are all those parts you listed actually compatible with one another? Like, if I went out and grabbed that exact setup right now, would everything actually fit together and work, or am I just buying a pile of expensive paperweights?
Yo, does anyone have any clue what kind of cash I could pull in if I offloaded my old motherboard, CPU, and GPU combo? (CPU Desktop Intel Pentium G6950 2.8 GHz (3072KB, Clarkdale, 73W, LGA 1156, Cooling Fan) box; Motherboard LGA 1156 ASUS P8Z77, P55, DDR3, ATX; Video Card GAINWARD PCI Express 2.0 x16 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GDDR5 SDR 768MB/192bit, HDMI)
Can this build actually handle all the heavy hitters out there right now, and more importantly, will it still hold its own a few years down the road? Also, what on earth is this technical jargon about (OCZ SSD ARC 100 240GB, OCZ Barefoot 3 M10 Controller)? I'm totally lost here, so if someone could break it down for me without using a bunch of gibberish, I'd really appreciate it.
Look, I’m not trying to push this specific setup on anyone—if you know a build that actually flows better together, just lay it on me. I basically just found this list online and threw it together because I was trying to stay under $1667, mostly because I have zero clue if these parts even play nice with each other. Seriously, tell me what you think the move should be. 🙂
Hey, if you don't mind me asking, could you point me toward a motherboard that actually works with this Intel Core i7-8700K, s. LGA 1156, 4.0 GHz, 16MB cache, Octa-core setup? I'm looking to build this rig mostly for gaming, so if you happen to have any other killer configurations in mind for around $1667, please just lay them on me. My big goal is to have a machine that can crush newer titles without breaking a sweat for the next few years—I'm talking stuff like The Witcher III, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Grand Theft Auto V, and things like that.
I was thinking about tossing an AMD processor and a motherboard into my old case, but I honestly had no clue if they’d actually play nice together, let alone find a graphics card that wouldn't throw a tantrum with them, so now I'm out here hunting for parts that actually fit. That was basically my whole dilemma—just trying to figure out if all this gear is even compatible or if I'm just wasting my time.
Hey everyone. Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way. So, look, I picked up this PC exactly five years ago, and now it’s finally time to give it a massive overhaul with some fresh parts. Here’s what I’m currently rocking in my old rig: 1.) CPU Desktop Intel Pentium G6950 2.8 GHz (3072KB, Clarkdale, 73W, LGA 1156, Cooling Fan) box; 2.) Motherboard LGA 1156 ASUS P8Z77, P55, DDR3, ATX; 3.) Memory DDR3 1333 MHz 4GB (2X2GB) Kingston Non-ECC CL9 DIMM; 4.) HDD SATA II 1000 GB Seagate, 32 MB, 7200 rpm; 6.) Case Frontier Corsair Void Middle Tower 400W, ATX; 7.) Internal SATA Samsung SSD DVD burner, lightscribe, black, retail; 8.) Video Card GAINWARD PCI Express 2.0 x16 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GDDR5 SDR 768MB/192bit, HDMI.
Basically, I want to shove a brand new processor, a motherboard, and a graphics card into this case, plus beef up my RAM alongside the 4 GB I already have. I’ve already been browsing and put together a little wishlist, so I really want to hear what you guys think about these choices: 1.) Processor Intel Core i7-8700K, s. AM3+, 4.0 GHz, 16MB cache, Octa-core; 2.) Motherboard ASRock A88X, Intel B85, DDR3 ... 3.) Graphics card PCI-E XFX Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 DD, 4 GB DD35 4.) Memory PC-17000, 8 GB, Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, DDR4 2133 MHz Gamer series. I'm really hoping someone jumps in here because I could seriously use the advice.
Hey everyone, I’m looking to pick your brains and get some solid advice on putting together a build around the $1667 mark, specifically geared toward heavy gaming. I’ve already got my case and a hard drive sitting right here, so I just need to figure out the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and a reliable power supply. For context, the case I'm working with is a Fractal Design Meshify C, ATX; and my storage situation is currently an old-school 1TB Seagate SATA II HDD, 32 MB, 7200 rpm. I was leaning towards going with an NVIDIA's processor and matching motherboard, but honestly, I'm open to whatever else you guys think is the absolute best bang for my buck. Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way! 🙂
