Is it just me, or does it feel like we're already planning for next year's fall seasons? I can't believe how fast the calendar is moving lately. Anyone else dreading the chaos of getting the kids signed up and organized?
About six months ago, I was involved in a minor fender bender—just some scraped bumpers, maybe $600 worth of $233 damage—that I apparently caused. I was stone-cold sober, the police showed up, did their whole routine, the usual stuff. What I’m trying to figure out is this: once I get a summons from the Municipal Court, am I actually required to show up in person? From what I’ve gathered looking at the law, if there’s enough evidence to hand down a verdict, they can just rule on it without me being there. Can I just write up my defense and send it via certified mail or drop it off at the clerk's office instead of physically appearing? I want to know if that actually works in practice, and specifically, whether there will be any fallout for me if I decide to skip it. To be clear, I'm not looking for advice like it's probably smarter to just show up; I already know that. I'm asking if someone who actually understands the system can tell me if they can simply base a ruling on the police report and mail me the decision afterward without me ever stepping foot in the courtroom.
