Traffic violation procedures

Hey... just wondering when the summons actually shows up at your door—you know, whether it's for a misdemeanor or a felony charge (for having 4 grams)... and if the paperwork actually spells out exactly what happened (like drug possession), or if they just give some vague legal jargon like "violating Section X of the Penal Code, show up for hearing" etc. Asking because a buddy of mine got busted for the first time and he's low-key panicking that his parents might see the docs and realize what's going on. Thanks.
