Nationalism vs. Chauvinism: Where is the line? in Close to Politics ·

And yet you’re busy keeping tabs on a mobster like Mamić while letting Štimac run wild without a second thought...

Heh...

The real tragedy is how these two collaborate behind the scenes, fixing match results whenever it suits them...👎

wearycrane7 said:haha... honestly, I'm telling you. My whole crew got kicked out of the arena... left a massive mess at the Marriott bar later... and ended up grabbing drinks for two hours with Vranković and Aca Petrović... they didn't even mind our little chaos...

Because showing a video of Dražen Divac critiquing Petrović's character and his game... that's just unacceptable.

God... the fact that you were locked up because of the madness in the arena... I mean... I practically make my living working at a nightclub most weekends... 😁 😁 Just kidding... 😉

But being detained at a game, especially when "Alphe" comes to haul you away (I assume they eat raw meat for a week straight leading up to this just to get that aggressive toward the fans 😁), is actually pretty brutal sometimes... 🙂

No, look, I make it out to the Rose Bowl twice a year... I love the Kansas City Chiefs... and honestly, I was embarrassed by that game against Cleveland... if I'd been high or something, who knows, maybe I would have flown too...

But man... what on earth did they think they were going to achieve by charging that fence... all they were going to get was a beating... and some of them did.

hehe

I’m not talking about you. You live in New York City, for God's sake, I’m talking about these local "fans."

What were they trying to accomplish? I haven't a clue... maybe they wanted a repeat of that scene from the Cup final a few years back... when the east side railing nearly gave way because those guys on the west side charged it... there was footage of it on CNN. The barrier could have snapped completely this time, too, but then... then Joe Biden would have had to show off his athletic prowess... 🙂

wearycrane7 said:What do you mean imprisoned? I was actually hauled off by the cops during Dražen Petrović’s induction into the Hall of Fame...

The whole ceremony even featured clips of Vlade Divac, who was basically Dražen’s arch-nemesis...

And then the whole thing just went completely sideways... hehe

Try beating that. And honestly, what did it matter if the game itself had been any good??

LOL

Yawn... 🙂

No big deal...
😁 😁

While the rest of the North and East stands just chant, "YOU ARE ALL IDIOTS!"

😁

I actually know some of those "30," so you don't necessarily have to jump straight to calling them druggies. Honestly, people were just fed up with having some low-life mobster like Stan running the club...

You see... these fans shell out $167 every single week just to support the team through travel and everything else, yet they're the ones getting criticized. And usually, it's the fair-weather crowd who shows up to the stadium maybe twice a year for the big games, acting like they're the most hardcore Hajduk fans/Dinamo fans/Osijek natives/Rijeka natives out there...🙄

If you haven't spent at least one night sitting in a holding cell because of a football match, you honestly have no business lecturing anyone about what it means to be a fan. Period. 😁

rapidhound78 said:Why even bother? You don't even attend the matches yourself. Why should you care if there’s fighting? Besides, we don't really have that issue here... if you saw what goes on in places like the Netherlands or elsewhere in the West, you might actually shut up about us Americans and our fans acting like savages for a second.

In the States, stadium violence is practically non-existent. If I recall correctly, the last major incident was back at that cup final in a city like Miami a few years ago.

The propaganda machine is doing its job, plain and simple. They love to run headlines like "England finally cracked down on hooligans..." and all that nonsense. What a joke. Sure, maybe you see it at Premier League games or top-tier matches, but sometimes the real chaos is the siege outside the stadiums themselves. West Ham United, Millwall FC... do I really need to spell it out for you? And then there's the fact that you still deal with stadium violence in the third tier, but of course... the mainstream media finds none of that interesting enough to report.

I actually have an old dictionary from 1983, published by Youth in Chicago, where everything was censored under the old regime, and the definition is listed exactly as stated above.
If you look at even older dictionaries, you’ll find these same definitions for words used centuries ago—words used by the ancient Latin speakers that form our linguistic roots, terms defined by Roman law. This trend of equating nationalism with chauvinism is a recent phenomenon, pushed over the last few years by certain local pseudo-intellectuals and hardline old-guard ideologues, and eventually, it will be baked into the unwritten dictionaries of the future... 🙂

That is precisely my point. It is all PROPAGANDA.

Just think about it... how many average people have ever actually sat down and read a dictionary from cover to cover? Very few.

But how many of them hear the word "nationalism" being tossed around in a completely different context through their TV, newspapers, radio, or the internet...? A massive amount. And how often does it happen? Constantly, in about 90% of cases.

I’ll say it again. Propaganda. It is incredibly easy to sell people a lie when you understand basic mass psychology...

Look, you idiot, just a few posts back, Michael Adams2 explicitly stated he was from Duval! You get it? He said it himself!
Maybe I insulted him on some geographical basis😲 , though I doubt one exists; otherwise, you just came charging in here like a complete fool...😉

stormywolf65, do you honestly believe this kind of cheering could escalate into something more serious, even something bloodier?
And do you consider the fascists to be part of that group?
If they were aligned with Hitler, does that same logic apply to the Royalists?
👋
I only mentioned the Nazis because that's how the Germans handled things quite efficiently and elegantly...

And what exactly did they "handle"? Neo-Nazis still have the right to hold public rallies in Germany today.

God, you really are a Benedict Arnold... 👎

Jack Campbell59 said:I know John Doe already covered this, but here it is again, pulled straight from the dictionary:

NATION = A people; a community of humans who share a sense of common belonging.
NATIONALISM = The emphasis and highlighting of all values that are significant and unique to a certain people; a movement centered on developing a sense of love for national values.
NATIONALITY = Belonging to a specific nation.

NAZISM = NATIONAL SOCIALISM = HITLERISM = Submitting oneself to all principles of the National Socialist Party and the commands of its leader.

PATRIOTISM = Devotion; love for one's homeland.

CHAUVINISM = Inciting national hatred; policies involving the oppression and exploitation of other nations.

And all of you following that pathetic little slogan claiming "Nationalism is hating others, while patriotism is loving your own"—honestly, go take a hike... Just pick up a dictionary and look up the actual definitions instead of making them up as you go along!

It’s just fifty years of brainwashing at this point. If you repeat a lie enough times, it eventually becomes the truth... or whatever they tell us now.

It’s funny how the same people will insist that fascists were only those who fought alongside the Italians and Germans during World War II, yet when you ask if the monarch of the old regime practiced fascism, they suddenly have no answer. Ask them if the former leaders practiced fascism, and they're silent. Why? Because people's minds have been completely scrubbed clean.

Pure propaganda, nothing else.. ☕

For those of you who don't quite grasp what nationalism actually entails...

A little online seminar: nation, nationalism, and the people >
Quote:>>
unskilled amateur says:>
I was flipping through the seventh volume of the Encyclopædia Britannica when I stumbled upon this:

Nation (from the Latin *natio*: a breed, tribe, or people), a social community founded upon:
a) the belief among its members in a shared ancestry and a collective destiny in the past;
b) unique language, religion, customs, and a variety of symbolic tools used to mark collective belonging (anthems, flags, coats of arms, monuments, celebrations);
c) a sense of mutual solidarity, pride, and social equality;
d) political organization ranging from movements protecting cultural distinctiveness to full state sovereignty.

(There were still four more columns—maybe two whole pages! left after that.
For an encyclopedic entry, that’s an absolute mountain of text...)

Naturally, I decided to see what they had to say about "nationalism" as well.

Nationalism (from the German *Nationalismus* and French *nationalisme*), an idea and political movement in the modern era that emphasizes the unity of a nation, its interests, rights, or political goals, the understanding of a shared history, and its relationship toward other nations or states—in short, its collective identity.

(And there went another two columns, if not a full page. Truly excessive for an encyclopedia entry. 😁)

So, I thought to myself, it only makes sense to check out the definition of "the people," since given how it was phrased...

The People 1. (Under point one, it mentions something along the lines of a group of people in a lower economic class or some such, but that isn't really the angle I was looking for; what matters for this discussion is what follows under point two: )

A little online seminar: nation, nationalism, and the people

The People 2. A community of individuals that historically precedes the formation of a nation, whose members are conscious of their commonality and are thus linked by a sense of mutual belonging and devotion. Such a community is characterized by a shared territory with which its members identify completely, as well as a certain linguistic unity, traditional culture, beliefs, aspirations, ambitions, and so on.
Older ethnological and socio-cultural anthropological theories treated "the people" as a static social and cultural category where unity was achieved EXCLUSIVELY through objective cultural content.

(And then there were another twenty lines or so regarding that theory...)

Fascinating, wouldn't you say? 🙂

And let the police handle the enforcement—it’s basically a money grab!
If the government doesn't step in and if they have no interest in fixing it, then nobody else will!
That's just how the world works...👋

Name even one single country in Europe that actually sanctions those kinds of outbursts. Are we really suggesting that every single slur directed at another nationality warrants a legal penalty?...
