Maybe because it’s the same logic as seeing a campfire flickering way off in the distance and thinking it’s some tiny, stray spark, only to realize once you actually get close that it’s a whole different beast. It’s pretty obvious they understood that things tend to look a hell of a lot bigger once you're standing right in front of them. I mean, what else would it be?
