Importing from China

I’ve been in talks with some suppliers over in China regarding various auto parts—everything from tires and rims to universal components and shock absorbers.
I need to know what specific standards and requirements this merchandise has to meet if I want to import it under a US business entity.
For instance, the tire brand I'm looking at is a local Chinese brand that's already being imported throughout most of Europe, so I assume it likely meets the necessary safety specs.
What about aluminum rims—what are the hurdles there?
And what's the deal with other parts like shock absorbers or exhaust systems?
