Rhinoplasty recovery: What to expect? in Health ·

That’s totally normal—it was the exact same thing for me! You wake up with a swollen nose, it goes down by the evening, then you feel fine for a couple of days, and then—bam!—suddenly it's swollen again. Same went for my lips, too. For the first month, I couldn't even smile properly because everything felt so tight. But it all passes 👍

It's the same for me... It’s been a month and a half since my surgery, and every morning I wake up swollen, then it shrinks down for 2 or 3 days, and then it's back again. It always hits the left side for me—now I can finally laugh, though if I laugh *really* hard, the tip still feels tight (maybe just from the stitches not dissolving yet)!

Is this just temporary or is it forever?
Personally, I think it's adorable when people twitch like that while they're talking...

Honestly, I’m not even sure if he actually cut it or not—there were so many questions flying at me that I totally forgot to ask him! Right now, it isn't moving much—it might still be a little swollen, so I'll have to wait until things relax and the swelling goes down to see.

Laura Castillo7 said:They basically cut that muscle connecting my nose to my mouth—you know, so the nose doesn't wiggle while you're talking.

I actually think they did that to me! A few days after my surgery, my gums felt a little swollen—maybe that's related? Plus, it used to drive me absolutely crazy when I talked because my nose would "stick" to my lip and move around every time I spoke... but now? It stays perfectly still!

Oh man, you guys really comforted me with all that talk about my nose "running away" 😁
Honestly, I’m feeling way better than before—I’ve been taking daily selfies with my phone since the surgery just to track progress. But then, one day I decide I finally want to compare how my nose looks now versus right after the cast came off, only to realize my boyfriend accidentally deleted every single photo! 😲 😠🙂🙂
...Anyway, I have no idea where the stitches went on my end. I can actually feel the bone on my nose with my fingers—the tip is still a tiny bit sunken, so when I touch it, it feels like ants are crawling under my skin 🤣 , and my nasal passages have definitely narrowed 🙏 BUT my smile makes me look like a total idiot 😂 it's so weird

Yeah, and honestly—from what I've been able to see so far—there isn't even a single loose thread poking out yet...

It’s been a month and a few weeks since my surgery, and the tip of my nose still looks a bit swollen—the right side has settled down, but the left side just won't budge! In person, it actually looks okay, but man, in front of the camera? It looks terrible... like my nose is literally sliding off to one side. Is anyone else dealing with this?
Do you think it would be a smart move to use a little cold compress on the tip once I'm back home, just to try and "speed up" the swelling on that side???

How did everyone’s stitches turn out? I was playing around a bit with a Q-tip and found some dark stuff—not sure if it's just thread or maybe a stray hair 🤣
The tip is still pretty swollen, too. The area above my lip has flattened out, but I can't really give a big smile yet—every time I try to move my upper lip, the tip doesn't budge at all, it just feels super TIGHT
Does anyone else feel that pulling sensation near the tip? And does it look like it's pointing upward?
Once the stitches finally come out, does the tip drop down and relax a bit more?

Sorry if I'm being a pest, but please tell me how long it's been now and if your nose looks normal or if there's still some swelling?

It felt long! But honestly, maybe it’s because they were constantly adjusting it—or maybe just to make sure I didn't accidentally bump it during that week.

Honestly, I was already on the verge of tears before I read your post... but I’m still not totally happy with the results. The profile looks fine, sure, but from the front? NOPE!! It feels weird, kind of blunt and wide... I'm just dying for the swelling to go down and for the tip to taper—ugh, when is that actually going to happen?!☕

To be honest, I have no clue when yours will finally settle down. I took my cast off exactly 8 days ago and there's still some swelling—the top part has flattened out, but the tip is still puffy and feels a bit wide. But hey—today was the FIRST TIME I went outside without a headband (just after dark!) and nobody stared at my nose. Even though, of course, I felt like everyone knew! 😁
My friend actually headed back to campus for classes just two weeks after getting her cast off!

jadecrane3 said:So, I finally took the bandages off, and honestly? I feel so weird!!! From my profile, everything looks totally fine, but when I look at myself head-on... I don't know... I just don't feel like myself right now. It’s such a strange feeling... and also—just a tiny bit—I feel like I have a little breakout on my nose (mind you, my doctor told me the tip would settle down, and a friend of mine said the same thing).......

DON'T PANIC! When I took my bandages off, I was a crying mess for two whole days—plus my eyes were super swollen from the tape 😛 and a friend told me the swelling would go down, and it did... slowly but surely...

lonemason10 said:I don't even bother with chamomile... honestly, the swelling is going down regardless! At this point, whether it takes one more day or not doesn't even matter to me.
And I have no clue why people suggest massaging it—I think it’s some skin thing about circulation? Someone showed me a technique, moving from the tip down to the base of the nose... hard, too—like, right up to the point of pain—multiple times a day. 🤷

Ugh, that's seriously starting to get on my nerves—why can't any of these doctors talk the same way? Mine didn't mention oils, solutions, or anything about blowing it out—and like I said before, he never mentioned massage at all. Look, I'm not exactly fragile, but I seriously cannot handle pressing from the tip (which is super swollen) down to the base. 🙂

jadecrane3 said:Nobody told me I was supposed to be massaging anything either...

And even if I were to try—I honestly have no clue what I'm supposed to be working on! I can't even touch the tip of my nose without it feeling super weird... just this dull, nagging ache...

jadecrane3 said:Yeah, and honestly, it’s not even my upper or lower lip that feels swollen—it's just that I can't smile normally! Mostly because I still can't move my nose at all... I'm not even sure if it's just those medical tapes holding it in place or if my face is just totally numb right now. Can you guys actually move your noses? Like, do you feel anything, or can you even manage a normal smile yet??

As for the "aftercare," they just told me to rinse the inside with cold chamomile tea using a Q-tip... but is it actually helpful to put chamomile compresses on the outside too?? Will that make the swelling go down faster?

They took my cast off seven days ago, and I'm only just starting to feel like I can laugh a little harder without it feeling weird.
At first, I was constantly fidgeting with my nasal splints, but now I can finally wiggle my nose—you know, that little scrunchy face when you're annoyed? I'm doing it constantly now! It felt like my whole face was frozen solid for a hundred years, so I probably looked like I had random facial tics for a while. 🤣

I am so confused about this chamomile stuff. I kept putting compresses on my nose all day long and noticed the swelling starting to subside, but then I read online that people whose swelling goes down don't even use them. I don't know—sometimes it feels like it's smaller when I *don't* use the compresses, and then when I hold them on for a long time, it feels like it's puffing back up. Or maybe I'm just imagining things! At least the compresses helped wash away the leftover residue from the cast.

lonemason10 said:Well, your nose is still swollen—of course it’s going to look wider! Honestly, I don't know... did he actually lift it or not? Either way, it won't look like this forever. Plus, you're hyper-focusing on every tiny detail right now, so everything looks way worse than it actually is.🤷

My lip wasn't even swollen... I took my mold out 7 days ago, and while one side is still slightly puffy, literally nobody else can even tell.

Are you using saline solution to clear your nose and doing the massages?

To be honest, I'm not sure—but I don't think he lifted it much. Before, whenever I talked, my lip would pull upward toward my nose, so he told me he’d bring it down.
I'm constantly staring at myself in the mirror, so everything just looks the same to me all the time.🙂 I really need someone who doesn't see my face every single day to take a look and tell me if there are actually any changes.
I haven't been blowing my nose, but he gave me some drops from the pharmacy that help with it.
And why do you have to massage it? He didn't mention anything about that, but I read somewhere that you're supposed to do it so you don't end up with a bump? Is that why?

I actually had my nose surgery three weeks ago—did both a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty—and man, when they finally took those tampons out, I was almost in tears. My nostrils looked huge, like, seriously wide, and the tip was all wrapped up and lifted (total pig nose vibes!). But then, things started settling down; the nostrils began to narrow and once the cast came off, the nose finally started to drop back into place.
BUT, I just got my cast removed last week, and I’ve been doing chamomile compresses for about 5 or 6 days now, and my nose is slowly—and I mean SLOWLY—deflating. Is anyone else going through this???🤷
My lip is still a little swollen too (well, specifically the gum area above my front teeth), and obviously, the tip of my nose still looks pretty wide.
Other people don't seem to notice it nearly as much as I do, but since I can feel the swelling going down, it feels absolutely massive to me!🙄
