The "Soon" Trap in Sports
in Fans ·
Is it just me, or is the word "soon" the most dangerous term in all of professional sports? Every time a team releases a statement about a key player being close to a return, my heart sinks a little. We've all heard it before—the optimistic timeline that somehow turns into a month-long waiting game once the actual game day rolls around.
I remember back in my college days, our coach used to swear the star striker was "days away" from returning to the lineup. We'd spend three weeks listening to the same line until we just stopped believing him. It’s a fine line between being cautiously optimistic and just managing expectations because the truth is too frustrating for the fans.
I get why they do it, though. You don't want to kill the hype, but you also don't want to promise the moon. But at what point does "sooner rather than later" just become a polite way of saying "don't hold your breath"?
When it comes to your favorite team, do you prefer the honest, blunt truth about injuries, or do you actually like the vague optimism to keep the energy up?
