The "Recruitment Arms Race" and the death of local loyalty in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the shifting landscape of amateur athletics, specifically how the "connection" between a player and a community seems to be evaporating in real estate terms. It used to be that you grew up playing for your local high school, and if a big-name program in your own region showed interest, there was this unspoken, almost poetic sense of destiny involved. You played for the jersey that represented your backyard.

But lately, it feels like we’ve entered this era of hyper-mobility where talent is treated more like a liquid asset than a local treasure. It’s not just about the players, though—it’s about the programs themselves. We are seeing these massive, powerhouse institutions essentially acting like predatory corporations, scouting halfway across the country to pluck specific profiles that fit their "winning formula." There is no longer a sense of "building from within." Instead, it’s about identifying a specific high-value target and throwing everything you have at them to pull them into your orbit, regardless of how many thousands of miles lie between their home and your campus.

I remember watching my older brother play back in the day. He was a standout, and there was this whole local fervor about whether he’d stay in-state or head out to a major conference school. When he eventually chose to go far away, it felt like a loss for the local fans, but it felt natural. Now, it feels like the "scouting" has become so surgical and the "offers" so aggressive that the concept of a "homegrown hero" is becoming a relic of the past.

What worries me is the psychological toll this takes on the actual spirit of the game. If a player is constantly being courted by elite programs from different coasts, do they ever truly feel a sense of belonging to a community? Or are they just transient occupants of a jersey, moving from one high-performance environment to another based on whoever has the most compelling pitch or the most prestigious brand? It feels less like a community endeavor and more like a high-stakes talent acquisition strategy.

We see this in so many arenas now—not just in college sports, but in how talent migrates in the tech sector or even in high-level academia. The "brain drain" or "talent drain" from certain regions is becoming a permanent state of affairs. The big hubs just vacuum up the best and brightest, leaving the smaller, regional programs to scramble and try to play catch-up by outbidding or out-pitching their peers. It creates this massive wealth gap in terms of opportunity, where the "haves" just keep getting better by raiding the "have-nots," and the cycle just repeats indefinitely.

I wonder if we are heading toward a future where the "local underdog" story is completely extinct. If the elite programs can just reach out and grab anyone they want from anywhere in the country, the parity in these competitive circuits is going to vanish. We’ll just have a handful of "super-teams" that are essentially curated collections of elite assets, while everyone else just fights for the leftovers. It’s efficient, sure, but is it actually good for the soul of the sport?

Does anyone else feel like the "loyalty" aspect of being a fan is getting harder when you know the players are essentially being recruited like commodities in a global market? Or am I just being nostalgic for a version of competition that simply can't exist in the modern era?

Question 😍...has anyone here had any direct experience with Classic deli meats in Indianapolis? Specifically, I am wondering if anyone has ever exclusively used their products for their own needs... myself included, for instance. Any insights or personal anecdotes would be immensely helpful to me!🙏

Regarding the catering situation... I recently had the opportunity to observe the work being done by Gourmet Express over by the highway interchange... and they have truly achieved something remarkable. It is my current estimation that they are contending for the title of the finest catering service in the city; they seem quite capable of manifesting just about anything your heart might desire.👍

🤷...I find myself sharing that curiosity, though I suspect the bill might be somewhat substantial...☕

Hello ladies, I was wondering if anyone has had the chance to visit that new bridal boutique located on Strossmayer enough to pass by the Rock Church.... the dresses displayed in their window are simply exquisite. If anyone happens to be searching for a wedding party color scheme featuring white and green, I must say there is one particular gown in the display🤣—a stunning white piece accented with a green sash!!!😍

I really am quite the fool, aren't I? 😵Have you by any chance attempted to track something down online??🤷

blue_jay; said:Hello everyone... I see everyone else is busy shopping for wedding details, but I was wondering if anyone here has recently had a ceremony at a major cathedral? How far in advance should one actually start inquiring about availability? 🙄

If you listen to how others handle things... you really ought to make that decision as soon as you decide to move in together.🤣!!
And then, of course, there is the matter of when the actual wedding takes place.

Dennis Ramos said:I mean, I've tried searching for those specific thirteen-dollar glass globes
for floating candles, but they're nowhere to be found. Even at places like Target or HomeGoods, they're easily forty bucks$17—it's just not happening!

I'm afraid I don't quite follow Zlato's point here.🤔

Laura Morris4 said:Well, my initial thought was perhaps those little lavender sachets or some other aromatic herb...
you could pick out fabric in whatever color you prefer, sew up some small pouches, fill them with dried herbs, and tie them off neatly with a ribbon.
You could even embroider names onto them or attach a personalized paper tag to the bow.
I find that quite charming and unique...

Now, now... that isn't a bad idea at all...👍..just keep thinking if anything else strikes your fancy... go for it!

Laura Morris4 said:Well, they finally arrived today...
I wasn't even particularly frazzled when the doorbell rang, as I was just getting back from a night shift.
I went $0.48 to grab a jar
I ordered sixty of them, so $29
the only downside is the shipping cost, which was about $13.
But honestly, it’s exactly what I wanted.
I have the honey ready, and I plan to place them in little tiles adorned with sweet bows...
I am quite pleased.🙂

It really is wonderful; I simply adore those little wedding details, and everything feels so lovely right now that I find myself feeling rather indecisive!!! Does anyone happen to have a suggestion for a small, sweet treat I could place next to each guest's plate?🤷 !!!😁

I am quite pleased you managed to track them down... though I must ask, what was the damage per jar?

If I recall correctly, you might find what you're looking for at that little boutique tucked away behind the Super store—you know, the one that seems to stock absolutely everything required for a wedding.👍

Oh girls, my dear hasn't even managed to pick out a suit yet..👎 We spent a little time poking around town today, but honestly, every single suit we came across felt just so... traditional. Does anyone happen to have a recommendation for something a bit different?

My wedding is set for May 9th, 2008.
I have managed to settle almost everything already.
I actually own a banquet hall and cafe.
The photographer is sorted—a gentleman based out of suburban Chicago.
The rings have been ordered...
I am designing the invitations myself; with a little imagination, everything falls into place.
And I intend to do the same for the decor.
I have already envisioned the hall; the theme will be red and white.
Floating candles and crystals, or rather, stained glass elements...
I shall send some photos once they are ready.

Welcome to the group.😁.....dear Unknown.

If you are looking for photos on par with what the girls in Washington, D.C. usually get, I suggest hiring Ann as your photographer. He truly understands the nuances of the craft—knowing exactly how to capture the moment without all that tiresome, over-rehearsed posing. He has an endless supply of creative concepts, and you can simply tell him whatever strikes your fancy!🙏 🙏 🙏 Regardless, please just wait until you see my own photos before you pass judgment!

If anyone would like his contact information, please send me a private message!👍

Oh, dear Ashley, please send me his number via PM... I have heard his work is quite wonderful.🤣 ??

branki said:The photo was taken by Bob from Ivanov, so I was wondering if anyone knows what his rates are like.

I am originally from Indianapolis, though I ended up booking Bob from Ivanov... he is certainly on the pricier side, but he is truly 👍 !! I suspect my total won't be too high, given that I won't be needing a camera, which should save me about $1000 less than usual!!!

Mark Kelly4 said:The decor isn't anything special, just pretty standard. There is plenty of space, though.

Good morning...☕ ...that is precisely my dilemma, as I am constantly attempting to devise a way to arrange the hall so that it feels, shall we say, truly unique 😁 !! Oh well, I suppose I shall eventually come up with something!!

Since we have already ventured into the territory of jokes, I find myself wondering if any of the ladies here have hosted a wedding reception—or perhaps have one planned—at the Student Union?? I happen to have an upcoming event there, so I am attempting to gather some insights regarding the hall's decor and overall setup. ☕

Hello ladies, I find myself posing yet another question to the group...🙂 ..does anyone happen to know where in Indianapolis or the surrounding areas I might source some white tulle—perhaps a slightly wider variety—as I am looking to use it for decorating a venue?
