Schizophrenia - General Discussion
in Psychology & Therapy ·
I decided to register on this forum specifically to gauge your collective thoughts on a recent experience. I am getting married later this year, which necessitates attending those pre-marital counseling sessions held by the local clergy. Today’s session focused on the eligibility for marriage—essentially, who is permitted to wed and who is not. The instructor was a Reverend who also serves as a judge in the ecclesiastical court (the body responsible for adjudicating marriage validity and annulments when legal impediments exist). What truly caught me off guard was his assertion regarding canon law; he claimed that individuals suffering from certain mental health conditions are ineligible for marriage, and should such a condition be discovered later, the union would be deemed null and void 😕. He explicitly cited schizophrenia and manic depression as examples. If this isn't a clear case of discrimination, I fail to see what is. Personally, I have no history of psychological issues, yet I found his remarks deeply unsettling
