I was watching some highlights from a Triple-A game last night, and it got me thinking about how much of a psychological rollercoaster the minor leagues must be. You see these players hitting absolute bombs and looking like superstars for an inning, but then you realize they're just one bad week away from being completely forgotten or sent back down.
It’s a weird kind of purgatory, isn't it? You're playing in front of a handful of people in a mid-sized city, putting in all this work, hoping that one big performance finally forces someone in the front office to notice you. I've always had a soft spot for the guys in the minors because the talent gap between them and the major league stars is often razor-thin, yet the lifestyle difference is a universe apart.
Does anyone else follow the developmental leagues more closely than the actual big leagues? I find the "will-they-won't-they" aspect of a player's career way more gripping than the championship races.
